The rear diffuser could make a big difference. Last year it was producing ~50% of the cars overall downforce virtually drag free. Over time all the diffusers were pretty much the same in design, so no advantage was had by anyone team. Now, it's all up for grabs and it could play an important role.

Red Bull is losing out on using the outer edges of the diffuser outside the rear wing end plates... I think they should have extended the diffuser the maximum legth and allow the rear wing end plates to effect the parts of the diffuser that fall within it... but then again I am no Newey of aerodynamics.

I've gone through this entire thread and I've noticed that the diffuser on the FW31 is the only one with the outside edges at an angle.

The rest of the cars have either perfectly square or rounded corners, but with perfectly vertical end plates. I don't think this was mentioned before, and with this quick scan through the thread I paid very little attention to the words, so I hope I'm not repeating old news...

If that's all the area that Red Bull are missing no wonder they went their way.

I expect an RB/Williams hybrid to become the standard.

I like how the RB5 uses the endplates to create what is effectively a double decker diffusor.

Why does williams diffusor seem so much higher off the ground than the other teams?(angle of pic maybe?) or does it have to do with how they exploit the crash structure to extend the diffusor higher?

I think it's the angle of the pic - it's taken from really low down, close to the ground. Most of the other shots are from higher angles.

Williams seems to have extended their wing endplates down to meet the diffuser like RB5.

Also, a nice view of the 3rd damper in that image of the Williams.
