If I had to guess I'd imagine drilled and scrapped.

thanks man
Im into recycling i know this is a shot in the dark here but anyone have an idea how I would go about getting used F1 tyres or how to get hold of them the second they are used before being discarded.

in the era of a tyre war the manufactures removed all used tyres for secure disposal.
it is fair to assume that this is still the norm as it will conform with 'recycling' initiatives
whilst i dont know for sure and a quick check of
http://www.bridgestonemotorsport.com/Br ... n-gb/Home/ doesn't bring any obvious answers i would assume they remain the property of Bridgestone
perhaps fire an email to the Bridgestone F1 team
if you do i would also be interested in the response

I doubt Bridgestone wants anyone to have their tires... they could be given to a competitor and analyzed. I'd say there's no chance of getting a current one.
Something really old, maybe. I've seen 90's F1 wheels and tires on ebay once in a blue moon.

With the reduced number of tyres allocated to drivers this year I thought I'd resurrect this topic...
With 11 sets of tyres per driver that's still a total of 286 tyres per weekend (assuming there's 26 drivers....)... which is a hell of a lot.... and require carting all over the world to the various destinations... not only that, but what happens after they're used.... I would've assumed that Bridgestone would have made a big song and dance about how they recycle the used tyres, but their website is conspicuous in its absence of any details about what happens to the used tyres... even their article about the life of an F1 tyre finishes on raceday....
So the FIA want to reduce costs and promote green technologies? Surely the first thing they need to do is seriously reduce the number of tyres that are used, and then they should promote the tyre recycling side of things too.... reducing the number per driver from 14 to 11 goes some way (although with more teams this year, hardly at all), but way more needs to be done.... more tyres does not improve the spectacle, so why bother?

I think you meant 286 sets of tires... correct? 1144 tires total per race
They could do more good with the money they could get by auctioning off those tires to the fans... but recycling is good too.

I'd still imagine Bridgestone drills and scraps em themselves, securely.
If I were them I would want no part of a competitor getting them and being able to analyze their materials, compounding, manufacturing process...

Tyres used in DTM races (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) are sold after every race to the Fans for 5 Euros. Thats a really nice idea and a nice souvenir. Those F1 people can still learn some stuff from other series.

Oops, yeah, even worse!

If that's true its criminal! All that rubber simply being scrapped after 1 weekend of use?!?!?!?!

What else would you do with it?
It's a mixture of steel, assorted fabrics, rubber, oils, resins, sulpher, carbon, silica.. what would you recycle it into? There's very little that's environmentally friendly.
And the volume of tires that are gone through isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to the volume of consumer tires. Even in NASCAR where they go through up to 10,000 tires a week... that's nothing given that a normal tire factory can produce 40,000 tires a DAY.

They are available from memorabilia websites,

I am pretty sure I have seen an older ones (circa. 2000) on the rim. I always wanted to make a coffee table from one.

See my earlier post:-
machin wrote:seriously reduce the number of tyres that are used
....by mandating a far fewer number of sets per driver (i.e. by making them harder so the cars can do a whole race on one set, maybe even qualifying too.... it might even improve the racing by increasing the ratio of power:grip ... an often touted reason why racing in F1 is less exciting than many other formulas)

All you said is the tires would be 'recycled'. Into what? Certainly not new tires..
