Is this a plot to get back in FOTA or are they serious with the recent (all be it very track depedant and some errors on other peoples parts) success of KERS cars?

But FOTA are only 8 teams out of 13. So what FOTA says about KERS isn't binding to the other 5 teams inc Williams and Force India.
Now that McLaren have won a race with it they will likely start looking at changing FOTA's tune internally.

Williams appear to still be developing it - and i don’t think they would still be spending the money, if they were not going to use it next year

it wont do them any good they will dump way to much into developing it and not get the rest of the car working. Pretty much like every other year

Williams bought a minority shareholding in Automotive Hybrid Power Limited. Thy re-branded to Williams Hybrid Power which aims to continue development for commercial applications
Quote from Williams website
Ian Foley, Williams Hybrid Power’s Managing Director said, “As AHP, we had begun to develop our own advanced flywheel technology for application in vehicles. As Williams Hybrid Power, we will make use of the higher profile and Formula One development programme to accelerate development and bring it to market more quickly.”

Is the KERS debate over now??

Looks like the teams have agreed now.

a damned shame, so I wonder which team's extraordinary $2000 wheel nut will be the technical rave next year.

It has been almost a law in F1 that teams cannot agree on something for a longer time. This KERS ban will probably not be for long if it ever takes hold.

What was initially considered a failure, KERS, could arguably be called a success on a performance basis.
Teams that have it have a distinct advantage in keeping opponents behind them, for a long time if not all race. If the teams had anymore of a power advantage with KERS, either everyone would be using it, or the teams that did use it would be dominating by now.
It's a shame it is going to become stillborn for 2010, especially considering the Flywheel Capacitor and what it promises as an efficient KERS system, which is not wasteful compared to battery KERS, and has longevity and little maintenance required.
Anyone using a Merc, Ferrari, Renault, or BMW engine has the ability to package an existing system on to their cars. Toyota is the odd engine out.

If KERS is so advantageous for some teams, why did they vote for FOTA to drop it?
Like Giblet said above, it didn't primarily help overtaking, rather an advantage in staying ahead?

The biggest technological advancement/challange that we've had in F1 in years and the teams agree to drop it.... rubbish!!!!
KERS was hampered this year by the stupid "Energy discharge per lap" rule... without it and simply a maximum storage capacity (i.e. no change to the actual equipment fitted, just to the control of that equipment), the advantage would be much greater and you wouldn't get people on here saying its a rubbish technology!

The 400 kJ storage per lap is actually rather realistic when you consider the efficiency of the different components. An F1 car don't spend much more than 15 seconds per lap on the brakes, which is only 900kJ with today's 60 kW MGU, even without losses.
The point is that those numbers, a 60 kW MGU with a 400 kJ storage capacity, was not chosen arbitarily.

Your numbers do seem to make sense in theory...... but in practice whenever the KERS information is displayed on the TV and the car in question goes across the line the KERS "battery" symbol goes from empty to full.... which implies that the car has actually physically fully re-charged the system, but due to the rules can't start discharging it until after it has crossed the line (when the 400kJ per lap is re-set)... so the technology is definitely being restricted by the "400kJ per lap" rule, rather than say simply a "400kJ maximum storage at any given time" rule....
If it were up to me I'd get rid of the 60kW charge/discharge rate and just have a maximum storage at any one time rule and let the teams optimise the system from there.... that would be much more interesting...
