After reading alot of chassis/suspension design books lately, I had the thought that the answer to their problem may be the tyre offset? Couls adding a bit of scrub give them the heat they need without compromising the entire suspension system?

From Tune to win, and Engineer to win, Smith doesn't say that offset causes horrid traction problems, simply induces scrub which wears the tyres faster, and heats them up.

And JT, the problem is getting the tyres hot, so instead of the obvious toe/camber/castor/pressure adjustments, I was thinking of a 1-2mm spacer behind the wheel may be a setting that would get them what they need without utterly destroying the suspension geometry and control systems...

Just because that's what a driver says, or even an engineer, publicly, doesn't mean it's true.

It's a popular excuse though.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Smith on that one.

But if you'd like to prove it yourself, go take a tire.. any tire.. put it on the ground and "scrub" it against the pavement. Or sit in a FSAE car, stationary, and steer the --- out of it. Let me know how much that heats and wears the tires.

Plus if you want your tires to run hot, you DONT want them to wear. Worn tires run cooler than new ones.
