wow, goony, that's a bit scary. some people are just nuts. One's own mother? These are the kind of people who I think don't even deserve jail time. Send him to Texas and they'll execute him there will pleasure.

Anyway, on another "what the hell" note, I got a speeding ticket yesterday, going 59mph on a 35mph zone not far from my home. What can I say, it's a light to no traffic road with a lot of elevation changes and fun turns. I was actually going about 65mph a few hundred yards back but thankfully they didn't catch me then.
I got a 200 dollar ticket, and probably there will be another 200 dollar surcharge on it. Pretty pissed about it. Speed limits in the States suck. I think the law-makers think that people still drive Ford Model T's.
Here is how it went: The cop pulled me over and said I was speeding and where I was going. I said, going to get gas (I was). He looked at the dashboard and the low fuel indicator light was on. He took my information and after about 20 minutes of waiting gave me the ticket.
So I went to get gasoline and was driving back home on the same road about 15 minutes later. This time I was going really slow. He pulled me over again to ask if there was anything wrong. I said to him, No nothing is wrong. You pulled me over earlier going 59, so now I'm going 11 mph, so over the two runs on this road it averages out to 35.
I don't think he saw that coming and was taken back a bit. Then told me, Get out of here, smart ass or I'll take you in. I said, have a good night officer. Then proceeded to drive at 11mph again.
Got the court date on the 10th, next month, but going to talk to the district attorney tomorrow for some kind of reduction. It's my first ticket, so I'm hoping I can work out something.

Well jddh1, you should be happy, over here they take away your license if you go more than 70 km/h (44 mph) in a 50 km/h (31 mph) zone...

whats that supposed to mean? what because of my job my neighbour cant be killed

goony
ehh... dont know... That you have to be as serious as Ron Dennis?

About speed tickets, here there are some "pic controls", but police generally has nothing to do with them.
I payed a $120 ticket (40 USD) for doing 123 kph in an 80kph zone. For less than 40kph I would have payed about half of that.

I was driving there for the first time, so it was a new one... but also know the areas where there is no control and generaly I drive at 215kph where 130kph is permited. I consider thats not too dangerous in a 6 lane freeway with no traffic, but thats just me. What do I know?

LOL

as for my response, I knew I was going to drive back through that road anyway to get home, so I really thought about it, driving slow and what to say in case he pulled me over again for crawling down the road. It was not spontaneous, i'll tell you that.

I guess it depends on how they do the zones. Generally in the UK 30mph is for residential or urban streets.

Having known someone killed on a crossing by a speeding driver who skidded when they slammed on the brakes then I'd say anyone speeding in a 30 zone should have the book thrown at them.

I'm sorry to hear about that... residential speed limits make perfect sense. In the U.S. it is typically 25 mph and should be followed for good reason. However, a few months ago I got pulled over for doing 55 mph in a 45 mph zone. It was a 3 lane divided highway at 11 PM when I literally was the only driver on the road.

I can't see the logic in paying a police officer to sit and do nothing but wait for someone to break a silly law like that. I actually could have comfortably driven much quicker through there, but thankfully I was taking my time. I would like to see speed limits based on common sense rather than just an absolute number. My understanding with the autobahn is that it is monitored. When weather, visibility, and traffic volume allow the speed limit is lifted. However, if weather rolls in or traffic starts getting more congested they start imposing a limit.

This makes sense because it caters to human tendencies. If you post an absolute limit, and a driver knows they can safely go faster, more often than not they will. Over time, the speed limit loses its value. However, if the speed limit is open under fair conditions, but then a limit is suddenly imposed, most drivers would think "this limit must be here for a reason" and they would slow down. Just my 0.02USD...

This road I was driving on is not residential. There's nothing but trees on both sides of the road. (In the Spring it's like driving in a tunnel; pretty cool.) It's just a back road that goes parallel to the main one, about 2 miles west of it. The only things you will hit on it are deer or fallen trees after storms. I actually found out it was 35 only when the cop mentioned it. I thought it was a 45mph road.
