OK. I'm done with IE8.

I don't understand computers like I should or as much as the rest of you. So I'm asking for a bit of advice.

I want to load one of the other browsers. I had Firefox on my last computer but didn't really use it to it's potential. This computer has Safari on it, but I don't see that much difference. I know Ciro the Great recommends Opera. If I was to download it, how do I dump IE and Safari? I don't want them eating up space on my drive.

You can't dump IE because it's built in. For Safari you can go to add/remove programs in the control panel and uninstall it from there.

I'm not sure which is better between Firefox and Opera.
I suppose Opera is better straight out of the box but Firefox is good when you've added several add-ons, however this slows it down a bit.

I use both.

Opera is set as a primary browser. It's better for 'surfing'. Things like Ctrl+Z (to open a tab that you accidentally closed), magic wand (ctrl+enter = fill in the login and password fields and press login) etc etc etc.
I never ever had this problem with Opera.
Oh and Opera 10+ has a built in spell checker that's really easy to use!


There is a reason I use Firefox sometimes. You see Opera can have problems with flash based websites. Some websites even wouldn't display except a message "please use one of the following browsers..."
Also Firefox has greasemonkey scripts available, they allow things like easy download from youtube, view UK-only protected content on TopGear website etc.

Noscript- blocks javascript in websites you are not fimiliar with, prevent nasty malwares from running.
Web of Trust - Blocks opening of websites that have been reported to have malicious code
Adblockplus-my favorite, just click on annoying flashing adverts in pages for a clean, lean view of a webpage.
Cooliris - View webpages as pictures
Coolpreview -fast browsing, preview linked webpages without leaving teh current wegpage
Customizegoogle-enhance google search results and remove ads and spam
Downloadhelper -download videos and images from the browser itslef, no need for other external video downloaders
Fireshot- take screen shots current viewed webpage, cut or edit
Flashgot - download manager
Foxclocks - great for tracking current time of all GP circuits
Skipscreen - skip unnecessary webpages in rapidshare, megaupload, mediafire, etc., automatically downloads after waiting for mandatory wait time\
Statusbar Scientific calculator - sits on the status bar that you can use without leaving the current webpage
Skype extension for firefox- The Skype toolbar automatically highlights phone numbers featured on a web page, for example and allows you to call them in one click. You also have the option to add any Skype contacts and phone numbers that the toolbar highlights to your Skype Contact list, and more
IE Tab- for for webpages that only displays optimally in IE browser, like MS Update or security website when getting a security update.

Well, thats about it why I recommend firefox, because it's customizable.

I'm also a firefox user, and recommend it. The next version/update of firefox (3.6) is due very soon and should make it even better:

If you're running windows 7, then you can completely get rid of internet explorer as things like windows updater are no longer reliant on it. If not then unfortunately you'll have to keep, though that doesn't mean you'll have to use it.

I too very much recommend Firefox, it's my primary browser for just about everything. I use Opera , IE and Chrome for testing purposes during development only.

Actually, it doesn't really matter, as long as you don't keep using IE. It's just a nightmare, even IE8 supports only a marginal subset of standards currently used on the web.

Rather call FF a nightmare, at least IE actually loads the web pages. I stopped using FF since 3.0.5 or something as it didnt load any web pag eanymore, i had to click like 50 times before it works. Now im running IE again and i didnt notice any problems at all, it works alot faste rthen FF.

I haven't been back to IE since I touched firefox. You wont get burned with this fox.

I prefer Chrome and Safari, one for speed, the other for visual history.

To uninstall IE6: format your hard disk. Then throw the PC through one of the Windows of your house (ha, ha! Throw through Windows... hilarious).

To install FF in 700 computers (as I have to do): install 12 or 14 plugins. Repeat 699 times more until you die of exhaustion (or, better yet, you find a way to trick Tomba, n_smikle, deus1066 and casper into doing it for you).

As I recall, there is a plug that packages a FF installation with all its plug ins and user settings. You can then use your normal push utility to remotely run it on your user's machines.

Incidentally, if you've got 700 PCs I'd have thought you'd have a tool that snapshots a test PC before and after an application is installed. It can then replicate the changes for all your users.

Oh, and it is worth running FF so you can get the warning "Here be dragons" when you go to about:config

If you're on M$ Windows i reccomend Opera You have all you need and much more straight out of the box, some of the things I like are mouse gestures (hold right mouse button and move your mouse, move it left and you go back, move it down you open a blank page etc) the popup blocker is the best of them all, inbuilt mail manager, inbuilt torrent downloader, and it's pretty damn fast! Oh yes, it can read stuff for you too...

Unfortunately there seems to be some problem in Ubuntu Linux, the flash is messed up. So I'am using FF until they figure out what the problem is and fix it

You can the use the Microsoft-owned folder syncing and sharing tool, FolderShare. First you need to open an account here https://www.foldershare.com/, then go to through the process of snyching.
In nutshell, anything that you configure in Firefox in PC A, will be automatically synched to PCs B, C... (be carefull though because it will include saved passwords to all you websites accessed through PC A).
