The concept of the BRM -outfit in Bourne coming up with a contraption like the 1.5 kompressor V16 without outside help is completely unfathomable, why I belive in the legend of the drawings taken as a war-whatever after their sorry army finally managed to cross the Rhein.

The technical level between Germany and the UK in them days were different solar systems. While the brits were shipping their pitiful armored vehicles en masse, one Wehrmacht Panter could easily take out three of those before lunch.

And if you would dare to confront the Waffen-SS with their Tigers, running low on fuel as they did, get outta there.

Simply a technical xplanation of the past, like it or not, but as a mechanical engineer, one cannot help standing in awe when beholding the contraptions produced at the time.

Whenever the Königstiger (Tiger 2) appeared on the western font in 1944, everyone ran for cover. The amrican attack-flyers could take them out, but only when their Maybach V-12s ran out of gas, sitting ducks they where.

Then there was the "Maus" of course, but that's a different story alltogether.

How do you manage to get things so wrong.
The early 'panzer' tank had a tiny gun and was no match at all for French or British heavy battle tanks. It was the tactics used in blitzkrieg that allowed the Germans to roll up Europe.
The Tiger of which I have two models one with cameras I used to shoot vermin in the garden, were a good tank with the 88 AA gun a classic. However they were far to complex and had too narrow tracks for use in Russia in Winter. The T34s walked all over them, as did the later Allied tanks including the big gunned Shermans.

Got to brag a bit, since I'm probably the only person on this forum (and globally) who had accidentally pressed trigger-button on tank, while it was parked in the garage, and fortunately only machine gun was loaded and ready to fire.

BTW, I was in the infantry and totally illegally messed with the tank.

My ex gf was in an artillery regiment, drunk as heck, calling in artillery practice shots from 14km away, 500 feet from the impact.

The person firing was also drunk.

I don't think it was intended as a joke, but the "maus" became one, Wittnann and other individuals within the "panzer", like Guderian or the desert rat were made public heroes, when at one point in time Wittmann made a complete arse of himself.

The "maus" was sanctioned by the fuhrer himself, who had ordered 200 of those monsters, when Wittmann while on the guided tour in the shop says;

"My #32 Tiger is 50 tons and I don't have gas for that thing anyway, now you're suggesting I need another 100 tons to carry aeound in the Ukraine?"

No spin-doctors in those days.

This WWII tank talk is definitely OT here. Why don't you open an OT thread about it if your fascination compels you to discuss the technology? Some people don't like to be exposed to war machinery.

They actuallyy built, and flew, from Bretagne to NYC, and back. Not dropping bombs or anything, just for show.

Reminds me of that war time RAF song about the B17.

We are flying flying fortresses at 40,000 feet and we only have a tiny little bomb.
The Heinkel would fit that description well if it flew to New York and back.
It did not bomb anything because the aircraft was full of fuel.
Unlike the Mosquito which could bomb Berlin and carry the same load as a Lancaster and fly as fast as the current German fighters.
