Kvyat goes fastest for Toro Rosso on third day at Barcelona

Daniil Kvyat can be happy with his second day in the STR14. He rounded off an extremely productive day for Toro Rosso by going fastest on the softest C5 Pirelli tyres, just 15 minutes from the end of the session.

On one of his last of 137 trouble-free laps, the Russian set the fastest time of the day, narrowly edging out Kimi Raikkonen, who had gone fastest before noon on the same, ultra soft C5 Pirellis.

The session was highlighted by the debut of the Williams FW42. After the car had arrived in the morning, the team put everything together and managed to get running half an hour into the session to get their very first laps in. Williams ended the day with 23 laps, not a bad start, given the team obviously had to do quite a few installation laps and system checks before George Russell was allowed to set a timed lap.

The pace of that lap, although probably totally irrelevant, wasn't worth much, with Russel's best more than 8 seconds off the pace, and 5 seconds off the Mercedes duo who ended up 11th and 12th fastest after another low key display.

Daniel Ricciardo was third for Renault, and had a bit more of a successful day as he managed to clock 80 laps in the R.S. 19 - the most he has done so far this week.

Sebastian Vettel followed in fourth place, making it the first time since pre-season testing started on Monday that a Ferrari failed to top a session. Max Verstappen was fifth for Red Bull, mainly due to lots of running in the afternoon after a quiet morning session.

Hulkenberg, who ran the R.S.19 in the morning, ended up 6th fastest, topping Grosjean and Fittipaldi. Haas also drew the spotlights to them, though not for the right reasons, as the VF-19 stopped twice this afternoon, and had a similar stoppage in the morning session as well. Each time, the problem appeared to be fixed quickly, so it's probably not that much of a worry for the team.

McLaren meanwhile had a low profile day. The team were out late in the morning due to modifications on the car overnight, and Sainz Jr. ended the day 9th fastest, ahead of Perez, both Mercedes and the debuting Williams FW42.

Testing continues tomorrow at Circuit de Catalunya for the 4th and final day of the first pre-season test.
