Remoted-Controlled Racing?

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

We all know about UAVs etc......How about the Concept of Remoted-Controlled F1 ????

Given the issues of Safety and the sheer amount of cost, weight, material, technology that goes into 'supporting' an onboard driver; wouldn't it be fun to see what would happen if the F1 cars were designed to be driven by Remote Control.

The Telemetry Data feedback (cameras, diagnostics etc) is substantial these days and should be able to cope with most conditions.

The driving skills and tactics would have to change drastically too, as any propogation delay in control/feedback would require Drivers to concentrate further ahead of their position to prevent collisions etc.

Just a thought :-)

No. I don't think so.

Why all the trouble with cars that may run loose?
I say make it directly Simulator vs Simulator :D

With real vehicles it would turn into a cross between F1 and Stock Car racing with drivers taking out other cars etc.

As Dragonfly suggests it would also be nice to see a 'Simulation' series where F1 Drivers use modern Games Simulators and see how they pan out in those against each other.

As a side question does anyone know which Game Simulators F1 Drivers use ? maybe which ones they say is the best in their view or which ones they use to 'practice'?

Even if a team buys some sim components "off the shelf" as it were, they're no doubt going to be heavily customized on the level of internal subsystems. Can't just go out and buy that.

This is pro racing, not Forza.

Okay, given that there would no doubt be issues of crashing, temptation to force out another driver etc... because there's no danger to a driver doing stupid things... why not have a similar thing to the Olympic Indoor Cycling event....

Have cars distributed around the track at the start. They all start at the same time and if any car is caught it has to drop out of the race?

That would minimise accidents due to overtaking etc. Cars would have to pull out of the way as soon as the trailing car gets within say 6 ft of them.

Or stagger the starts just like in motorcross, and the way they do in time trials?

I'm all for the excitement that overtaking bring but it's also exciting to watch Picture-In-Picture moments showing cars positions at defined stages. Though we don't get much of that in F1.

Some sports show an 'overlay' of the other cars postion in relation to another car at predefined points so you can visually see the gap, rather than just a number.

UAV's? I guess it depends - would these cars be armed, or merely invading my privacy?

I can't see fans buying t-shirts with their favorite algorithm on them. At least, it's a limited market. Mostly F1tech members.

It would also be nice to see a 'Simulation' concert where Pete Townshend plays Guitar Hero.

I had no idea that Bernie Ecclestone learned to use the Internet.

Any attempt to publicise remote controlled full size vehicles will attract a certain amount of interest from the law enforcement people. A remote controlled full size vehicle is a handy device for all sorts of naughtiness.

A more interesting idea would be a competition/championship with no drivers at all. That would at least develop some useful technology (road scanning devices, systems that sense surrounding cars and that takes evasive action etc). We see all these car manufacturers producing PR stunt cars that "can drive themselves", so why not race some F1 spec robocars instead? It would be technically fascinating, but of course it would be an awful substitution for proper motor sport. At the very least, it could lead to improvements in the damn AI on racing games.

Edit: mep, I meant more interesting than the idea of RC F1 cars (which is silly). Read the part where I said it would be an awful substitution for proper motor sport. This was just another pipedream idea which I thought was better than full scale RC cars

Hello Mep.

Yes we all know how much F1 relies on the physical location of Human Drivers in the vehicle and the benefits it imparts.

The purpose of this thread is to 'open-up' the discussion as to how far F1 'could' go given moderen/future technology.

There is a mountain of effort and discussion regarding F1 vehicle technology but this thread is aimed at discussing how the Driver's position in relation to 'driving' may evolve.

It's meant as a light-hearted way of letting people let their imagination run riot.

Who is to say that future F1 will retain a Driver in the actual vehicle?????
