Please help identify a race from the late 70s early 80s

As a kid in the late 70s or early 80s, I watched a race on TV that has stuck in my mind ever since (35 years ago?). American TV - must have been ABC? A Ferrari 312T4/5 was battling another car - I remember the other car as being red, but I could be wrong. Several laps occurred where the other car would pass on the infield turns, and the Ferrari would spool up and pass on the straight - this battle happened repeatedly over several laps. Amazingly entertaining. I believe the weather was sunny.

I think I remember the Ferrari - the design of the 312T4/5 is memorable, but:

Do I have the time and car correct?
Who was the driver of the Ferrari?
What was the other car, and who was driving?
What race was this and when?

Is my memory remotely accurate?
