Porsche ready to evaluate F1 return

By Jonathan Noble Friday, October 1st 2010, 10:22 GMT

Porsche is to seriously evaluate a return to Formula 1, its new chairman Matthias Mueller has revealed at the Paris Motor Show on Friday.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT's sister publication Autocar, Mueller said he expected his company's motorsport activities - which encompasses Porsche and Audi through its tie-up with the Volkswagen Group - to include both top-level sportscars and F1 in the near future.

He made it clear that he expected either Porsche or Audi to have an LMP1 car in the future - while the other brand would then enter F1.

Audi has competed in the Le Mans prototype class since 1999 and is working on a new car - the R18 - for 2011. Porsche ended its factory sportscar programme in 1998 - though it did produce the LMP2 RS Spyder for customer teams from 2005 onwards - and would be the logical choice for a return to F1 for the first time since 1991.

"With LMP1, there are two classes and two brands - Audi and Porsche. We do not like to both go into LMP1 [against each other]; that is not so funny," Mueller told Autocar's website.

"So therefore we have to discuss whether it makes better sense for one of the [two] brands to go into LMP1, and the other brand into F1. So we will have a round-table to discuss the pros and cons."

Porsche's entry to F1 would most likely be as an engine supplier, rather than having a whole team. It would also make most sense for the company to enter the sport in 2013, when all-new engine regulations are set to be introduced.

I just posted this in the silly season thread! 8)

As a Williams fan I would love to see Williams-Porsche.

Then next I would love to be able to afford a 911!

I saw the news about Porsche entering there in someone else's post, and replied with the Williams-Porsche thought. I didn't think the thought of my Williams-Porsche dream would need its own thread!

I feel special that you think think so highly of my dream that it deserves its own thread! :D
But then again looking at your name of course we need a Williams-Porsche Dream thread!

My response was directed at your addition to the article about Williams fans being hopeful of good news for Williams, not the article itself. I added a quote to above for clarity.

Porsche announces possible return to F1

Post

With the engine format decided in favor of a four cylinder engine for 2013 it is increasingly likely that Porsche will come back as an engine supplier to F1.

Speculations that this will be with Williams are premature. I'm sure the VW/Porsche group will consider very carefully which team will get a supply. It also remains to be seen which engine will be most competitive in 2013 and that should have a huge impact on such decisions.

Let's just put this in WB's thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9002&view=unread#unread

WB's thread is just more generic as "porsche returning." Given that there is no obvious linkup with Williams at this point it would be better to just talk about Porsche as Porsche

How can speculation be premature? I would assume that since speculation is part guess work based on available facts at the time, speculation can't be premature because facts available change over time. Speculation can only be outdated!

The current fact is that Williams and Porsche have a racing relationship already with the 911 KERS powered race car. So there for, its perfectly reasonable to HOPE(speculate)that it could be Williams-Porsche! [-o<

Quit Poopooing the Williams fans dreams! [-X

Of course Porsche will do its homework, but that doesn't mean anyone else wants to change mid-stride with an engine supplier they are comfortable with. (Tho granted the change in 2013 will be the time for that to happen.)

And who says Porsche will want to supply just one team?
It will be interesting to see what paths Porsche chooses.

Speculation is speculation, which is largely guesswork. Speculation can only be wrong/right and not premature :P

Williams has been mainly interested in the past to get free engines and works support. I do not believe that VW/Porsche are eyeing such a supply model. They have repeatedly said that they only want to supply engines and most likely to multiple teams.

I reckon the supply priory and the price will depend of the team performance. Williams isn't the top independent team nowadays. This would be Red Bull and they have very close relations to VW/Porsche through their various motor sport activities like Dakar.

Are Renault or Cosworth going to bother making a 1.6 turbo engine for 2013? I hope VW/Porshe supply a few teams. I like the idea of Torro Rosso-Lamborghini or HRT-Seat.

Cosworth are very determined. The only risk I see is that the working group will make too many restrictions They are advocating freedom of design and fuel restrictions.

Given the difficulties that the current engine suppliers have with finding customers, it's hard to imagine another one joining the mix, especially if they want to supply multiple teams.

Would Renault make way? I think that's unlikely given the technology platform is so progressive.

I guess they could look to take one customer from each of Mercedes, Ferrari and Cosworth. Force India Porsche, anyone?

Do the 2013 regs state the 4 cylinder configuration? V or flat or both?

Assuming both, would Porsche do a flat or a v configuration?
Would a flat config allow for lower CoG?
