The Williams FW14B. What F1 cars should be - the most technically advanced race cars in the world.

Also a simple exterior wrapping the best car on the grid in its day. So, much like Newey's current car then...

but what was quirky about the f2002, it was an allround good car which is why most eyebrows were raised which makes it very interesting, how did they manage to get it soo quick relative to others

Well, helped by a specialist tyre supply deal. How often in F1 history has a team had a tyre maunfacturer build them a tyre specific to their car...?

I guess we should add the McLaren MP4/1 to the list. The car that has saved more lives than any other by introducing the carbon tub to the sport. Think of how many drivers would have died in the last 20 years if they were still driving around in folded aluminium chassis...

In a similar vein, the Lotus 25 which introduced the concept of the fully stressed monocoque to F1.

Definitely fits in to the "gone aginst the norm" brief of the OP...

Considering they were the leading Bridgestone shod team then it is reasonable that they led development.
