World’s fastest production car to go electric – with “several years between charging”

Did they found out something we don´t know or what? Or they´ll use micro nuclear reactor like the article´s author thinks? Any ideas?

God knows how they could do anything nuclear and get permission for it from the various governments that would want to be involved.

But could they be looking at something like the radioisotope thermoelectric generators used in deep space satellites?

Maybe  Either it´s something we haven´t seen yet in a car or it´s exsisting technology with a major breaktrough... or none of those two. Maybe they´re making too much dust about nothing, everything´s possible

Did they mention how many years it takes to recharge? :)

For some reason, reading this mademe think of that rastafarian that refueled the space-liner in "The 5th Element"...LOL

It has to be BS. Anyone who developed a street legal system capable of feeding a 500Hp car for a single full day would certainly be dead and buried in the back lot of Area 51.

I want my nuclear car damnit! We've been waiting since the fifties for them...

But could they be looking at something like the radioisotope thermoelectric generators used in deep space satellites?

Does anyone have data on what kind of power those generators generate as compared to the power requirements of a 500hp electric motor?

Well according to Wikipedia those used in spacecraft have generated up to 390W of electrical power, with 7.2KW of heat. So the electrical conversion is very inefficient - you'd want, if possible, to do something with the heat as well.

That's about 0.5 horsepower, if you ignore the heat element, so not very good. However if it were used to charge an electrical system that provided a couple of hundred miles of capacity, then it may be able to keep it well charged enough when not in use to keep you going for a couple of years.

Seeing as there is only forty years of oil left according to some estimates this stuff is going to go nuts in the next ten years. I was speaking to an electronics engineer at Lotus recently who believes that we soon see classes in hill climbing for electric vehicles.
