A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Anything related to a specific race should go in the appropriate race thread.

you could even build a sagging system with a very small bleed...you would just leave the car on the jacks long enough and voila overnight you get a bigger rideheight that would even come down with use and more importantly over time .So the car lowering itself during the race ..but we had that discussed long ago .

Just remembered, I dont know if this has been mentioned, but could this have been the inspiration for the tunnel on the RBR?

Or maybe perhaps common sense ? :P I mean the tunnel leading air away from the area so the exhaust air can work better is a pretty easy idea to come up with, but ofc harder to implement.

This is perhaps not the right place to ask but what is the exhaust like exit on the point of the tunnel on the Renault above? Clearly not the exhausts due to the periscope style exhausts above the sidepods! Is it just a hole for a suspension arm to fit through to the gearbox or something?

To be honest, that reminds me more of the Acer ducts ...

There is a high pressure kink in the air stream in the area where the RB8 coke bottle slopes the greatest, that's what the acer ducts were trying to take advantage of, again Red Bull prove to have the most straightforward and efficient design in this area. Vettel only gets frustrated because he knows he still has the fastest car and can't convert because the margin has been...well marginalized.

Not sure about the fastest car (qualifying wise); in Hungary the McLaren clearly had the advantage. I do agree about the coke bottle and the back end of the sidepods; air and exhaust plume are extremely redirected.

RBR is definitely not the fastest car. I honestly don´t think you can point and say this or that car is the best.
It changes from race to race and in SPA we will see who has the best car at the time.

Not to derail the topic but I think the RB8 is still the fastest car, at least in race pace. It's just that they don't a.)have the qualifying magic they used to have, b.)there are other cars that are almost as fast overall, and in some circumstances faster or just as fast.

They had very slim wings for Spa and Monza last year too.

Here's a picture from Spa 2011:
