Red Bull RB8 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The rule clearly states that you can't channel the exhaust #-o
Which rule, where?

Why is the slot on top of the sidepod open on the right, but closed on the left?

(first time poster so sorry if this allready was asked somewhere)
Sorry, I don't see what slot you're referring to.

red bull arent 'channeling' the exhaust anywhere from what i can see, the tunnel under the side pod bridge is legal as the bodywork radius rule only starts 50mm above the floor

I can't find the rule or section
But the FIA were clear that exhaust flow cannot be channeled for aero purposes

Good spot! Also, they have a tiny little vein on the right, but not the left.

I'd hereby like to do something important for the board:

It could be to compare 2 cooling solutions, or different cooling requirement from each side. One side could have 1 radiator for engine coolant and the other side 1 for engine coolant and 1 for something else. Don't know if some are still using this solution or if they all switched to "offset" position for the 3rd radiator, above the gearbox for example. But it wasn't uncommon some years ago.

If thats the case, looks like the concorde agreement will have some very angry teams, media and sponsors forcing bernie and the FIA to implace the RRA in law/ruling.
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

One thing is for sure looking at this car. RB spent a lot more resources and a lot more money designing and building this car than the other teams.

RRA my rear end.

Wondering: are there any FLIR shots of this car (and others)?
I think a FLIR camera would point out instantly how the exhaust flows. (and some other airflows)

The exhaust placement and ducting may be similar to Sauber's but below is a totally different solution for channeling the air flow.
Image

Image is jaggy because I tried to filter it to make the rear sidepod part shapes more visible.

Doubt we'll be getting any thermal shots in testing, for sure we'll get some when the season starts.. wonder if the teams use these to help them analyse exhaust flow and if it would be useful.

the fact that one under-sidepod slot is closed and other open and leading air to diffusor tells me that red bull doesn't know much about effect of this kind of exhaust flow. they are comparing one open side with other closed and trying to find some gains. this exhaust may be good at the end but it shows that their first version was mistake and when they saw what other teams made with exhaust they had to make it from the begining. that is why they protested ferrari and mclaren exhaust systems at first test. they didn't hide it from the begining and leaving it as surprise for the last test.
