Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Is that a stopwatch or a Casio?
I remember back in 1993 Schumy in bennetton had a similar Casio watch on his steering wheel
Back the it was fantastic, but now it's low tech

I hate how f1 has gone backwards in steering wheel displays
I loved how they had all the big LCD displays in 2006
FFs my car has much better LCD displays
I think it should be blamed on Mclaren and their standard ecu
They never had any fancy displays and they simply promoted their displays to all the teams

Anyways, how does it work?
1. Is it connected to car transponder which gives them real time updates?
2. Does the driv press any switch to start and stop it?
3. Or he just looks at the time when he starts and stops and do a difference in his head? #-o

While I'm all about blinking lights and huge LED/LCD displays I'm sure simpler is better as far as less distractions are concerned.

besides being fancy, what was the point of the big LCD display anyways? To be honest, there was none, this setup displays all the info the driver needs, and does it clearly in a way thats relatively easy to see in bright sunlight. Mclaren were using this setup long before their ECU became standardised.

I think it is basically used as a "clock", so then the driver knows how long he has until the session finishes! Simple... but does the trick :)

No latest super amoled display has more brightness when viewing under sunlight
It can display all the race positions and gap to other drivers
It's really valuable info while driving
It can also show all kinda info

Anyways can anyone answer my question
How does the watch work?

But do you really need all that info while driving an F1 car?

Yes, but in those scenarios we don't have 3 people who each have multiple degrees monitoring every bit of info about our car and our competitors.

You can't call on radio each and every second to ask for gaps

Its better to have them all at ur disposal

It's all personal preference, for me knowing gaps in front and back gives me confidence as I can check if am going fast or not
And if I see my gap in front shrinking, that gives me great confidence

Anyways I remember a video of Schumy back in 2004 showing the displays and telling how useful they are

When driving in an F1 race, you wouldn't want to know the gaps constantly. You want to know your target lap time and whether or not you have to look after your tyres.

Here's the Bahrain exhaust:

Looks like the same exhaust with the gills for higher temperatures.

What part of the car is Merc blowing with the exhaust? In the picture above it seems like the exhaust pipe blows up in the air. How does Merc manage to get the exhaust gases to a specific part of the car?

they will go wherever the airflow over the top and sides of the sidepods go which in mercs case is most likely towards the bream wing and diffuser, other teams seem to be trying to get the exhaust gases towards the wheels
