Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

My conclusion is it's a strip of tape or paint too... That image although enlarged doesn't show the full extent of the imperfections near the edge if it were an aperture...

My 2p's on the subject...

I think that the solution can be here:

Mercedes is the only with a air inlet on brake's fairing and i think it's just under the rim's groove. There should be a correlation between this inlet and groove... Wait for next race to solve the "mistery" :)

Totally agree with you Matt, and add this photo. It might help you figure out who still insists

And Brawn confirmed they will have even more updates coming for Spa and Monza, I can't wait to see them.

Except that it makes nearly no sense to create there a black strip and a rim, but makes huge sense to build a double walled wheel.

do you have any idea what it would take to cast a double walled wheel?

It must be a slot and connecting to outside of the rim .
This should work as a heat barrier for the brakes , very neat work and difficult to make.
Fresh air blows trough this slot to the outside the rim.

My first post after lurking for years!

You are wrong about it being a strip. The reflections in the tyre tell it all, I've altered the image a bit with a couple of arrows to show the different directions the reflections point. Following these easily leads one to see the depression in the tyre. Further, the abrupt change of brightness at the end of the lip points strongly to an undercut or hollow area.

If it´s just a sticker, what purpose would that fill?
I´ve zoomed in on the big picture and it looks like a cavity to me.

I see nothing in the rules that says it needs to be a single casting.

I disagree, if it was a surface, it would reflect light at least a little bit, even if it was rubber(unless it's a perfect black body).

Secondly, the two "bumps" on either side look like beads, and those are exactly what you would use to stiffen the edge of a thin cylinder.

When did it matter for a top F1 team to create something difficult? Especially if the teams biggest problem is rear tire degradation since 3 years now. If this is a solution for that, then it is a simple one I think.
I still do not get why would they paint it to black, what purpose would it serve, especially since we can see on the break duct that there is some opening right there where the supposed wheel rim openings are.
And especially since their biggest problem is tire management is this is a viable possibility.
