this does not make a lot of sense to me . Why build a test hack now and be ready to use it only to run it next year when lessons learned from it cannot be transferred to the lunch spec of the Mp4-30....
this looks more like they have something else in mind :

sure you need some serious fans to move enough air through the car but I don´t think this is something you cannot do ..so full racing simulations are possible -minus g force of course as the whole assembly will be stationary..so not quite the real deal but better than nothing and you may be able to decipher g-load influence on performance by using such a rig .Nothing really new here .

It does make sense. The Honda engine is one that comes late to the party and requires catching up. Nothing better than catching up by putting the engine in a chassis that is known. This makes it much easier to point out issues and make sure these aren't present in the new chassis.

Has Mclaren already built a different gearbox and modified the MP4-29 monocoque? if yes, that means they spent a huge amount of money and that they are very swift. If no, that means the Honda PU has a Merc-like split turbo (because you can't mount a classic turbo in the original 2014 Gbox) and very simlar dimensions (compressor, Batteries etc)

Highly probable Honda will have built upon the Mercedes PU. They'll of course have differences in order to squeeze more out of it, but if they can just run a modified mp4-29 it is already telling how little differs.

From what I understand, the mounting bolt dia and postions for both engine / monocoque and gearbox / engine are fixed dimensions per the FIA regs for all manufacturers . Does this not make basic engine and gearbox mountings "interchangeable" - excluding any ancilliaries ?

Quote: "5.3.5 Power unit mountings may only comprise six M12 studs for connection to the survival cell and six M12 studs for connection to the transmission. All studs must be used and may be fitted on the survival cell, power unit or transmission. The installed end of the studs must be M12 and the free end may be a different diameter.
The mounting faces of the studs for connection to the survival cell must lie on the forward of the two planes described in Article 5.3.4 and be located at Y215/Z15(2), Y340/Z260(2) and Y175/Z420(2).
The mounting faces of the studs for connection to the transmission must lie on one vertical plane normal to the car centre line and be located at Y100/Z15(2), Y150/Z140(2) and Y255/Z345(2).
A tolerance of +/- 0.2mm will be permitted on all of the above dimensions, all dimensions refer to the centre of the studs.
The distance between the two planes is fixed at 480mm (+/-0.2mm).

They have to. It does not comply with the 2015 nose regulations.

There is a render here, from the 2015 Noses merged thread, posted by a fellow member.

Haha, you couldn't write this...

Look in the MP4-29H thread, scarbs gives a rough outline of his article with the picture.

What i am hoping for now that Peter is here and so much reshuffling has been done is that the 30 will be a simple, "clean" and highly efficient Racing Machine with no Gimmicks. So yeah, basically a Red Bull / Merc W05 type of Design Philosophy.
