McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Taffin - Renault:
"We know Mercedes is in front and that Ferrari is too, but we saw in the race, there is no problem getting past another car when it is needed.

"It's just emphasising the fact we have made big progress but there is still a way to go. I guess Ferrari is halfway to the gap we have got to Mercedes. Honda are catching but they are quite a way behind us."
Says something about the chassis !!

Second flap also has an extra slot near the outboard section.

Slots open at the Front, like Toro Rosso has it and Merc copied a few races ago. https://twitter.com/AlbertFabrega/statu ... 7860121600 https://twitter.com/ScarbsTech/status/7 ... 5358700544

I think that the louvres create small vortices that merge into one bigger vortex. The velocity field that is induced from this vortex (upwash) helps the wing produce more downforce and prevents stalling.

I know that this is contrary to the common belief that the purpose of the louvres is to balance the pressure difference from inside and outside of the endplate in order to reduce the strength of that vortex and therefore drag. But if that was the case why in low downforce-drag circuits like Monza we see Red Bull running without any louvres at all?

Because the wings are so shallow there the vortices are much less strong anyway.

Indeed, that's how I think about it as well. Just for comparisson:

Yeah maybe that's the case.

But I think that the particular louvres act like an "endplate-less" wing each one of them create a small edge vortex and all of them merge into a bigger one. If I find time I want to run a CFD simulation with and without such louvres.

Not using the new rear wing endplate louvres OR latest FW iteration
