McLaren MCL32 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Considering Hasegawa already said they want to trial some ideas and designs on the engine side I'm not expecting huge amounts of laps from McLaren during this test.

Those pitot tubes are very close to each other. detailed Y250 research. If they can go that detailed they probably have it well under control.

So clearly for the pitot tubes in front of the rear wing. Correlating the sharkfin.

Is that a IR camera mounted in the diffuser? If that is the case, they'll probably be working on tyre management.

What sorcery? You mean the Datalogging apparature on the Rear Wing End Plate?
As far as data logging devices go, that's a new one, they even bothered to paint it...
With all those engine changes, they have time on their hands ;)

It's surprising that McLaren isn't trying to compensate for the lack in speed by taking drag/downforce off the cars via simplification.

How can you tell? You want them to race without wings?
Taking away downforce would mean compromising/scrifying cornering speed.

General complexity of the front wing, brake drums, loads of elements around the barge-boards. I'm not implying removing wings, just simpler geometry - see RB13

They most probably based their work on the numbers Honda supplied them.

Difficult to just remove / change everything as it all works together.

Agreed, however, in their current state, it would be easier than redesigning an engine.

The chassis seems very modular, the aero parts around the bargeboards seems to bolt right on. I suppose the chassis was built with this in mind so that they could tweak the aero surfaces without major redesigns, if only their drivetrain had the same philosophy.
