Having just read the FIA rules for 2014, and trying to understand them!.............. I was wondering what these cars will look like, in comparison to what we have today?

Will the complex frontal aero wings be gone?

My understanding is this:

* Beam wings gone for start 2013
* Front wings being raised by 200mm and brought in bt 100mm either side
* Banning of cascade wings in the front wing & front flexi wings.

The rest of the car will be the same. Some explinations;

* Beam wing - the exclusion of the beam wing is to take away what has become a flow conditioner and make the air less turbulent for the following car and bring the gap from the leading car down from the present 0.8 to 1.3 seconds by half a second. Should reduce rear grip by as much as 20%

* Front wing - This is to reduce the front end grip by as much as 20%. The reason for this is to avoid the front wings cutting and puncturing tyres and also to try and an attempt to make front wing have less influence over the cars ballance.

* Cascade wings - this is to reduce the ammount of extra downforce that the wing can generate, and also minimise flexing, there will be a minimum thickness of the main plane of the front wing to prevent flexing as well. This will have another 20% of downforce reduction at the front of the car.

However in 2014 there will be a new wheel diamater as well, probably a increase from 13.3 inch to 16 inch rims, this will increase grip, also make the teams will have no mandated weight distrubution from 2013 onward so they can put more weight over the front wheels as well to get the car ballanced better that wat.

As for Tyres, there could be a new Tyre war with no tyre manufacturer being allowed to supply no more than 4 teams and a posible new tyre rule coming out as well. I think the posibility of 3 spec compounds per manufacturer and a return to the 2006 rule where each driver has to nominate a compound for the Saturday and Sunday running, however each driver will nominate 2 compounds for the Saturday and Sunday running.

Also there could be a new quali format in Q3 as well with each driver having to go out on new options that have been nominated by the team for that driver so the Q3 drivers have to set a time. Also Q3 could become a 5 minuite session with each driver only being allowed 1 timed lap to pile on the pressure. This is being debated at present, and may not come into the sport due to how fractured the teams currently are.

8-speed gearbox with the same gear ratios for every race.

Gearboxes will be 8 speeds, DRS will only enable in 7th or 8th.

A maximum of 4 gearboxes per season simmilar to the current 8 race engine rule. Each gearbox will have to have the same ratios with 5 allowable final drive adjustements accross all boxes per season as well.

This will cust €100,000 off a transmission generally and cut other costs as well.

There's also a new survival cell shape, we'll see a nose height limit at the tip imposed, and skinnier rear wings.

I was not under the impressions front wings were being raised at all, must have missed it!

There is nothing in the rules that suggest the wheels will be changed.

But the nose and the secondary roll protection are significantly changed. The trend for the nose is to come down and the surfaces on the top of the tub must be level. They must not be curved as in the past when designers used tricks to loop around restrictions.

There is also a big change to the way power for acceleration and breaking is controlled by the drivers. No more boost button. Both pedals will have to work in full dual mode. It means that the throttle pedal will simultaneously control the engine and the MGUK. The break pedal also controls the MGUK and the break calliper pressure.

Steering wheel displays will be supplied by the FiA controlled supplier.

Cars will have electric on board starter.

Exhaust gas recirculation is allowed.

Minimum weight 660 kg.

Bodywork width (wings) ahead of the front wheel centre line must not exceed 1650mm.

Energy storage system must weight between 20 and 25 kg.

Both pedals will have to work in full dual mode. It means that the throttle pedal will simultaneously control the engine and the MGUK.

KERS is a thing of the past. The new system will recover kinetic and heat energy. It will have a motor generator unit kinetic (MGUK) and a motor generator unit heat (MGUH). The rules about energy recovery will be very specific and there will be a lot more rules than the KERS system used to have. But the amount of total energy recovered will significantly increase. The MGUK will have a bigger capacity than KERS had alone and you will add all the energy recovered by the MGUH that is taken from exhaust turbine and is surplus to the compressor demand.

Regulations for throttle and break pedal mapping will be similar to today. Driver aids are not allowed. The driver is supposed to control accelerating and breaking torque unassisted.

There is nothing in the rules that suggest the wheels will be changed.

Nothig has been confirmed as of yet, however Pirelli have been told to prepair for one in 2014 at the earliest. However wheels are widely belived to be changing for 2015 when there is a rumor that there will be a second tire supplyer and new tyre rule as well where the length of distance a compound can go will be specified by the FIA, where there will be 3 compounds for each supplyer that will go to each event.

The tyre and wheel specs ideally would be this:

Wheel Dimentions: 407mm diamater from 305mm, 305mm width at tthe front and 355mm at the rear from 348mm
Tyre Rules will be the same, 660mm for dry tyres and 670mm for wets, however there could be a regulation for Inters that reads 665mm so that inters have less potancy in the wet and a more finer crossover when it becomes dry.

The increase in wheel size means that V-Max will be higher and the cars will be slower into corners, probably taking as much as 15kph off some of the faster corners, thus goading drivers into pushing the cars to the limit, thus more mistakes and with a higher V-Max, more overtaking at points you wouldnt think.

What has the wheel diameter got to do with V-max? Even the tyre diameter is of (from a ratio point of view) no effect once the gearbox ratios are adjusted. V-max only really depends on tractive power and aerodynamic drag.

For cornering its anybodys guess. The construction will be completely new so there is no way you can estimate whether cornering speeds will be higher or lower.

I would bet if a team decided to run a 4 wheel drive/steering system, they could use it and say the regs allow it.

There's already regulation in place to stop that happening. This won't be an issue.
