I wonder when Gilles Simon and Craig Pollock will come out in Honda-wear?

I just read this on the F1T news page: http://www.f1technical.net/news/19038

I'm probably missing something obvious, but why are the other manufacturers worried about Honda getting an advantage? Yes, all teams need to freeze their engine designs for 2014, but aren't all teams permitted to work on their 2015 designs, just like Honda?

If you enter a 2014 engine then you have restrictions on what you take into 2015 as part of the graduated development schedule, IIRC - whereas it looks like Honda get different treatment. C'est la vie - boo hoo :)

It's an interesting point though, it's going to be good watching the Merc guys at McLaren hiding their laptops from the new guys walking round :D

"It is rumoured Sauber will have Honda power, alongside McLaren in 2015," Schmidt reported. "Honda would have preferred to focus on just one team, but FIA president Jean Todt apparently intends to make the manufacturers share the customers fairly amongst themselves."
Ah, so perhaps Mclaren will not have exclusivity to Honda engines! :!:
Which could very well make it indeed more possible Lotus is actually opting for Honda engines in 2015, and it would be
interesting to see if indeed sauber could go for Honda engines in 2015. This could bring Honda-backed drivers back into
F1. Bruno Senna back in F1 with Sauber or Lotus in 2015?

very very interesting. I know it's just a media article but i'd be interested to find out more on these Todt statements!

Well even if there are more teams with a Honda engine in 2015, I'm sure McLaren will be the "works" team, like Red Bull with Renault.

EDIT: Never mind, look at the date of the article you quoted :P

sauber supposedly has a multi-year deal with Ferrari engines, so perhaps it'll be 2016?
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2013/10/04/s ... ri-engine/

Sauber are the final team to confirm their choice of engine supplier next year.
so lotus does have a renault engine confirmed according to this article.

but, even though these news reports date a while back, it's not without interest:

october 2012,

Proton signs a collaboration agreement with Honda, setting Lotus up for a platform sharing deal with the NSX

“Having a strong and renowned global automotive player like Honda as the foreign strategic partner to Proton will provide Proton and the DRB-Hicom group with the opportunity to grow as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) as the opportunities are endless.

“This collaboration will provide positive impact to Proton and the DRB-Hicom group in the long run.”

june, 2013

This is Honda’s first collaborative agreement with another original equipment manufacturer and it would like to keep thing under wraps as details are trade secrets,” Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil told reporters on the sidelines of the Preve launch in Jakarta yesterday.

Khamil also said DRB-Hicom had cleaned up the books of Lotus and was on a clean slate to move on from its financially troubled state of affairs.

“We are coming up with variants of the Evora, Exige and Elise based on improved technological innovation and upgraded performance,” he said.

He said the new Lotus model was expected to be unveiled in three years following the scrapping of the five year-five car plan conceived by the previous management.

“Up to May, we achieved encouraging sales of 80 Lotus cars, which is more than the 70 units for the whole of last year,” he said.

"Besides the ongoing Honda-Proton collaboration, consumers could also see future facelifts and models with improved engines after Proton bought the Petronas E01 engine patents last year, giving it immediate ownership to a family of naturally aspirated engines developed by Petronas back in its Formula 1 heydays. march 2012

Genii Capital may even consider to buy out Lotus itself if the sports car manufacturer struggles to break through in its production car operations and continues to suffer heavy losses. To note, Lotus made a £21.4 million pre-tax loss last year while Proton’s profits have begun to show a trend of decline. In January, the Malaysian government sold its 43% controlling stake of Proton to DRB-Hicom, a Malaysian Corporation involved in the automotive manufacturing, assembly and distribution industry. Genii Capital chairman Gerard Lopez has previously exchanged with DRB-Hicom on the possibilities of selling Lotus. Lopez said,”If there is a way that we think the company can be bought and run successfully, then of course we would be interested.”

the articles above showed the last actually happened.

So Lotus [through Proton] collaborating with Honda is very interesting.

It could explain the discussions based upon engines when Kimi was still interested in maintaining his Lotus seat [half a year ago]. It could very well be that inside information held 2014 is going to be the final Renault year for Lotus [Genii].
It wouldn't be strange because renault made it no secret to completely step out of this outfit in due time.
A disfellowship between Lotus and Renault wouldn't bring the highest prospects for Kimi to be convinced 2014 is going
to be 'the place to be' when he also has offers from other teams [like Ferrari and RedBull].

So if Lotus would be going for Honda power in 2015, perhaps 2016, I assume they indeed have to buy the engines, with Mclaren having the exclusivity works deal.

Honda's return in 2015 simply evokes old memories of the past, beautiful, fierce, sweeping prowess:

Beautiful piece of engineering. Imagine the guys from the current field going through Monaco with that wide car. Probably wheels would fly off everywhere in the first couple of laps :)

The MP4/4 by Gordon Murray is an evolution of the radical lay-down concept first tested in the BT55.
This lay-down concept was already very popular in front-engine roadster at Indy in the 1950's.
