Williams FW36 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Indeed! What a piece of engineering. Would love to see is up close in the back of the car. Want to see the Merc water intercooler that's next to the oil tank. Such packaging genius. Williams only runs the air to air in the sidepod.

"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

That looks like a lump of tungsten on the end of the carbon tube - so I'd be pretty confident assuming its ballast. The carbon tube looks to have a diameter too large to allow any flexing/mass damper effects.

Its not the side crash structure. You can see the turning vanes under the nose.
