What could the damage to the gearbox have been? It was a side impact not a rearward? Did the hit on the side restrict cooling are or something in the side of it for the gearbox? What could it have been.

My guess would be the impact put a lot of axial load down the drive shaft!

Mercedes reported that it was not related to the accident with Bottas
from PlanetF1:
"Mercedes also revealed that the damage to the gearbox was not the result of his accident with Valtteri Bottas at Turn 1.
Despite that Hamilton says he has no concerns about Mercedes’ reliability."
Pressed as to what did cause the damage, he said: “It doesn’t really matter.”

I read somewhere that Nico suffered some engine issues at the end of FP1. Is there some confirmation?

There's a short Story on AMuS on that subject.
I don't know if my translation is correct, but I read it as ignition Problems caused the engine to switch to an emergency programme. Everything could be solved for fp2.

How is this possible, all these testing miles with not a single problem.
Season starts and the problems start to pop up, first Nico in FP1 and now Lewis.
Didn't merc run the engine at full tilt in testing then? Would be strange to not do so...

Even in the times of unlimited testing failures happened.
Merc are maybe also pushing their technological development a bit harder to counter diminishing returns.

If he gets a new hybrid system, will he get penalised in Russia? Probably :|

Anyone knows if Lewis starts on softs or mediums? + wouldn't it be better to start from the pitlane (avoiding collisions)

Problem for @LewisHamilton has been identified as MGU-H issue. Team will put 2nd power unit of season in for race tomorrow. #skyf1
(will probably start from p-lane)

Latest from Merc: Lewis will start from the back of the grid with new power unit. LH had choice of pit lane start but wanted start on grid.

Why is there a need to start there? I thought that was only after exceeding five units per season?
