Mercedes AMG F1 W07

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The side pods were also updated in Silverstone:

Compare the 'PET' of PETRONAS in both images.

to me they look the same. But as photos were taken from different angles, the writing does become distorted.

That would mean the whole writing becomes distorted, which it doesn't.

The sidepod features a stronger inward curve at around the "R"

The PET is indeed slightly more dented on the silverstone version. I think this is just a matter of different cooling requirements for different tracks though.

The side pods are definitely different and this is more apparent when watching video footage. I don't believe it is related to cooling, as the cooling exits (barring those straddling the driver) remained unchanged. The new design appears to encourage the air to flow over the side of the side pod to a greater extent than the previous iteration.

There also appears to be a second bulge below the reshaped engine cover bulge. I don't know whether this is due to modified components underneath or the side pod having being shrink-wrapped further.

Very nice new nose, brings back the mean purposeful look an F1 car should have.

Enhanced Bhall´s great image, i mean PET looks to be angled differently on the top edge of the letters but the angles are so off it´s hard to say for sure.
There definitely seems to be a more pronounced bulge though.

Well the engine cover bulge was shrunk. This hints to a redesign of the ERS/Gearbox cooling radiator and similar ducting. Maybe this had a knock on effect with how the side pods are sculpted? Just a guess.

The mid-sidepod section is slowly evolving in a Ferrari style "downslope" to let the air flow lower, almost into the read wishbones.
Although a small change in bodywork, it looks like a huge upgrade.
