Regarding Vettel's engine problem, I guess it occured because he was using an older one? Otherwise he may have to use a 6th one..

Rosberg can't "improve" his driving style during the run because of the new rules. You can clearly see the difference now. The gap should be a lot smaller in FP2 after he has a good look at Hamilton's telemetry. A real pity, telemetry shouldn't be shared between team mates drivers should be able to figure it out themselves. But great consistency from Lewis , looking at the times Red Bull won't be a big threat this race. All though the picture will be much clearer after FP2.

The 2014 cars are only 2sec clear of last years FP1 time, I can remember that people after the Spanish GP were upset because F1 was only a couple seconds clear of the GP2 times. 2014 shows the relentless pace of development of the cars. I think the cars in 2015 will be faster or on par with V8's (More horsepower and more downforce, unfortunately the cars will be 10kg heavier).
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."

If Rosberg outqualifies Hamilton though (or ends up ahead in the race), it might not matter much, as it will be very difficult to overtake on this track...
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I think that's a bit one-sided. First of the difference is only a few hundreds. A bit of bad luck with the wind could already make that difference. Second, Hamilton will get to see Rosberg's telemetry. They both will have their faster and slower corners opposite to the other.

The only thing I like to say: too close to call for now.

Agree, i´m not too sure those numbers are something you can go by fully. He hasn´t forgotten how to drive an F1 car.

It's not like those F1 cars are expensive or anything!

The team want both drivers to be as quick as possible using all available resources. What "should" or "shouldn't" happen, or what is "fair", is simply a matter of opinion.

Graphics on sky showing Ham able to do most laps in 52.5-52.9 area with occasional cool lap.

From tracking some lap times on the F1 app, Ric showing quite a bit of speed too in that range. Ros seems to be a bit off the pace. Alo up there on some laps.

I'm going to be doing my traditional thing of being encouraged by early Alonso pace only to be sorely disappointed in Q... lol

Let's hope not this time. You would imagine if the team thinks the pace is good (which is what they said on team radio) they would be basing it on realistic expectations?

Seems like Ros did a longer stint at slightly slower pace. Ham made a change to the weight distribution on his car through the session so lost a bit of time and seemed to cut his stint a bit shorter to have a quick go on the softs at the end.

Unclear if Ham was driving harder and taking more out of the tyres so they faded on him compared to Ros (both on SS tyres).
