We are still waiting to hear from Hewland re gearbox, just sent them a mail yesterday to find out status quo. John H needs this info aswell asap, so he can complete the design of the rear plate and starter.

The full spec of the 'shiny' engine is:

75° odd fire V8
3.0 LITER displacement 84mm Bore X 67mm Stroke 4 cams, 32 valves via internal silent chain
530mm wide x 485mm long x 530mm high
500HP @ 11,000 rpm
280 ft-lbs torque @ 7500 rpm
200 lbs engine weight
Billet nitrided steel 180° crank
4340 H-beam con-rods with ARP bolts
Billet 6061-T6 aluminum crankcase
Dry sump 0il system with 4 stage pump

This engine is not using the original engine's mounting points as its not built to be a stressed member, but the cradle we will have to install will obviously use those mounting points.

Wow, this grabs your eyeballs! That H1 will be superb, there is a guy in Seaford Australia who makes gearboxes for v8 supercars at a budget - Modena engineering.
He could knock up some replacement gears fairly cheap, i would convert the gearbox from 7 to 5 speeds to simplify and strengthen the internal dimensions. You'll need good help getting the electronics sussed out. If the engine protrudes through the existing bodywork, clone the engine cover with fibreglass (it's not load bearing) 2 or 3 layers of cloth would be ample. Truly the stuff of dreams.

Hi there netoperek,

Thanks for asking, but we are still waiting for Hewland to finish with the gearbox. The good news is that they have confirmed they will be able to build us new internals in the original casing. This is obviously very good news, as we will not have to alter suspension points or body panels, and we can stick with the original wheelbase. Hewland have come to a bit of a halt, as they dont have some of the specialist tools reqired to dismantle some of the original Honda internals. We are trying to locate these tools, and if we can't, we will have to have them fabricated.

John Hartley is getting on well with the engine, but is awaiting a scan of the gearbox so he can finish the design of the back plate.

Sorry its a bit of a slow news period, but as soon as there's anything of interest to report, I will keep posting it here.

Mean to ask you, and sorry if it's already been covered.

Is this cars bodywork the repainted EarthDream, or is that original EarthDream bodywork elsewhere at Honda/Merc?

Hey Giblet,

The car retains the original body panels. Honda GP repainted and vinyled it in the 2008 livery as the car was used by JB at Goodwood FOS in 2008.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for posting the links. I am aware of Ledon Racing. I have bought a few parts from Nathan at Ledon in the past. Always had good knowledgable service from him.

The gearbox is still with Hewland. They're struggeling a bit as they need some specialist tools for removal of certain internals. Which they dont have. Hewland will have to have fabricate these tools, and that will be costly and time consuming. If you know anyone who was working on the RA107 gearbox, anyone who might have such tools, please do let me know. It would be a great help.

Wow... Hewland has to fabricate tools for this?! Just shows how specialised these F1 boxes are... Can Mercedez remove the internals for you? Or rent Hewland the tools?
