Red Bull RB10 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Info on the new ICE

"Although all F1 power units were homologated in February and since then performance developments have not allowed, fixes for reliability are permitted and the new Renault units feature a new shaft in the Motor Generator Unit K, which harvests energy from the brakes as well as a new oil system for the turbo and stronger exhaust."

Jeez they butchered that rear wing! look how much they cut off it! even whith removing the cascades, and this. they are still 15km down on the straights. cause they are geared way too short. but I suspect this is also cause they so down on engine power

If F1 wanted to. They could just dump that wastegate and not plumb it in to the single exhaust. that would improve the engine sound a huge amount. ive never been deafened almost. except when I raced a skyline with a external wastegate and dump pipe off it!

I believe the reason behind dumping the wastegate into the exhaust is to stop teams being able to 'blow' parts of the car with the blow-off.

Why do teams have large covers around the power units? Are these to stop media and other teams from seeing how each unit and ancillaries is fitted within the chassis? I ask this because they look like they would act as a blanket around the power unit, trapping hot air from escaping as freely.

I think that it is actually the ballistic shield that teams are mandated to use to trap not hot air but the bits of the turbo from flying off in case of the catastrophic failure.

it's for an aerodynamic advantage. It's simply internal bodywork designed to improve the aero of air flowing through the car
