Williams FW36 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's been mentioned before, but I can't remember if it was in this thread or in the suspension part, it's basically allowing the hub to be excited with little damping at full droop to help retain heat in the inside tyre.

The second pic really gives an indication as to how much Mercedes have minimised the height of the sidepods.

No, it gives a great indication of what cars look like at different angles.

he may have a point, it's quite fuzzy, but if you would draw a line from top of the rear tyre to top of the front tyre on Mercedes and then on Williams, Mercedes sidepod seems to be just a bit lower, you can even see the front tyre over the sidepod, and from what I can gather from Williams cars geometry, you wouldn't be able to see that front tyre if the car was as far away as Mercedes

p.s. it may as well be caused by speed, downforce or braking etc

Williams went for a double floor arrangement which makes the sidepods taller.
Williams also has this concept of "ending" it's rear end earlier and more abruptly (for quite a few years now), contrary to most teams that tend to slim it down progressively.
Looking straight from the back this makes them look very fat, but in reality it isn't.

Thanks Sevach, but the photographer eliminated a lot of image detail to the LOMO filter there.
