F1 2014 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Worth mentioning also, that Renault engines seem to be on trouble.
Even if some of the problems might have origin in the way Newey normally stress the packaging, Catheram has a pretty big cooling entry and pretty big sidepods and only made 10 laps?
Toro Rosso was in trouble in 1 lap?!
Damn, That's not good!

The last thing we want is F1 to be like a monobrand racing series! Let's hope these are only 0km glitches and that performance wise the engines are not that much apart

Does anyone have pictures of the Marussia MR03 and Caterham CT05 form similar side views? I just wanted to compare wheelbase length between them as the caterham seems to have the shortest and marussia appear to have one of the longest.

I think Mclaren are hunting for some sponsors as well so that needs to be taken into account for their pace. Rosberg said the times mean literally nothing because they are driving so slowly at the moment.

Also, why is Mercedes the only team to seemingly have an undeveloped read wing end plate tip? (The top part)

Before i make a comparison of the wheelbases of the car i want to discuss what would be the best way to estimate the wheelbase of the cars. For my method i took a picture that is shot almost perpendicular to the car center line. Then i measured the length of the wheelbase in pixel, the length of the front wing endplate in pixel and the distance of the tip of the front wing endplate to the front wheel center line.

The ratios of the lengths in pixels times the real length should give good estimation of the real wheelbase. Errors could result from the camera lens that distorts the real lengths slightly or from the distance of the measured lengths to the car center line.

Do you know other references that could be used for the estimation? Do you think the result of ~3520mm is correct?

Is the rim size standard and the same for all cars ? That could help I guess. Otherwise it's a very good post :) The ratio of the front/rear rim diameter in pixels could even tell you how far off the shot is from car center line - if i'm not terribly mistaken.

Coming back to Blanchimont's approach regarding the wheelbase, I had a quite similar approach I would like to present. Feel free to enhance/improve my approach:

Mercedes states their car to have an official length of 4800mm or 4.80m http://www.mercedesf1.com/en/fahrzeug/f1-w05/
I believe this is trustworthy, right?

Image

In this picture posted in this thread the car's length is 902 pixels.
Thus the 624 pixels between both axes should be equal to 3320.62mm or 3.32m.

Calculation:
W: Wheelbase

W/624=4800/902
W=4800/902x624
W=3320.62mm or 3.32m
