Day one ended at 77 laps, in MCL-Honda terms that's a big achievement =D>

Its obvious that McLaren won't be winning races this year. So I think that the strategy they are using (blowing engine after engine) is a wise one. Unlimited engines = they can run them harder and learn from failures, even if it means penalties. Without reliability, it does not matter if they start first or last, so they have to work on this first.

Wow.... perhaps the FIA needs to take a look at this. This is the second big sideways impact where the suspension stays intact (first Alonso in Barcelona).

The side impact protection which is designed to progressively break isn't even affected. The only energy dissipation seems to be in the bending of the frame and the barrier.

I wonder whether the suspensions now so strong and rigid that they are becoming a risk for the driver in the case of a sideways shunt.

Good to see they got 77 trouble free laps in today at testing.

you need to look at the accident though, Alonso never actually hits the barrier with his suspension, It's all caused by Raikonnen coming in under Alonso and lifting him up. the barrier impact is on the sidepod and not the suspension. The rear then hits.

I'd rather them have 20-25 grid place penalties every race because they blew the engine to pieces trying to push their way higher up the grade. For me, it's more exciting to watch a plume of smoke emerge as they overtake the car in front then watch them finish the race in last place.
Agreed!

If you look at this footage it seems to me that he hits rear wheel first.

See, I think that unfair. That isnt unreliability, its an accident, the only explanation I think of is to stop a team doing a Flavio and crashing on purpose to get a new engine.

If you believe the Honda twitter, the engine was not replaced (new ICE usually introduce themselves)
