So the positive to take away from this race is that both cars finished the race, and only got lapped once.

If you're a glass half-full kind of guy, that is...

edit:

But the silver lining:

5th fastest lap is unexpectedly good, I'd say...

Did Alonso pit towards the end for new soft tires? I was not paying much attention to the cars in the back.

Possibly.

Alonso also had the third fastest time in sector 2. Behind Mercedes only.

Alonso did pit for Soft tires end of lap 32 and set his fastest time on lap 34. I was tracking the race and lap times on formula1.com when my eyes suddenly lit up watching Alonso's lap time. But after that, he was consistently doing 1.56.xxx.

Not sure if he started cruising a bit after this lap because his lap times before the pit stop was also in 1.56.xxx. He was some 25 secs behind Nasr after the pit stop so I think McLaren asked him to take it a bit easy and take care of his engine.

I am wondering if Alonso managed to put that lap by not utilizing any energy in the previous laps allowing the battery to fully charge and then on lap 34 all the energy was utilized hence more power.

Interesting that both McLaren's best sector 2 times are ahead of both Ferrari's.

At least the reliability seems to be good now. Both Cars finished tha last 2 Races. That's something, isn't it?
And our Starts are Mega: https://vid.me/5gep

Edit: Reliability in terms of finishing the Race, bith drivers had trouble with ERS.

And here's the McLaren Race report:

Eric is a walking thesaurus:
"Of all the circuits on the current Formula 1 calendar, to this one is our car indubitably least suited. That being the case, it would be disingenuous indeed if we were to move to look askance at our finishing positions here today. Granted, to finish 13th and 14th on a circuit that has hosted 14 McLaren grand prix wins is unpropitious in the extreme, but splenetic we are not. Moreover, working shoulder to shoulder with Honda, we'll work as assiduously as is humanly possible in an effort to make the progress necessary to toil our way back to the front."

The PR People writing these Texts must have been insanely bored. Or it was Ron Dennis himself.

Indeed, as much Ronspeak as it gets, Boullir don't have that vocabulary.

Buttons ERS wasn't working well at SPA but it looks like in the video that the MGU-H is charging the batteries as oppose to redirecting to MGU-K during acceleration at every corner. That's what it means right? the blinking red light?

Further ahead Alonso is doing the same thing, recharging while going out off turn 15. By the time he reaches Blanchimont, his battery is already depleted and the MGU-h is recharging the battery. There were also numerous times showing Alonso recharging at the top of eau rouge.

Could it be that the mapping is set so that the MGU-h is to prioritize recharging the battery as oppose to sending it directly to the MGU-k?

I don't think you can say that whenever the red light flashes the mguh is going to battery only. I would expect that whenever the car is traction limited the excess power will go to battery anyway.

The red flashing light only means the max 120kW of electric power are not being used, it may be because it´s recharging or because it´s already depleted or simply because there´s a problem with it.

It warns the driver behind about the car is not accelerating at full power

maybe McH should keep that light constantly flashing

Even on the short burst down to Pouhon Kimi waltzed past Button, and he stormed past Alonso with such ease you'd have sworn Alonso had decided to hit the breaks and put it in reverse.

It's clear it's not just maximum power output that's the problem with the engine.
