Continuously Variable Transmission

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Continuously Variable Transmission

Post

Hi all,
does anyone remember DC testing a CVT in a Williams (a long time back, he was at Williams after all)? As the gearbox always keeps the engine revs in the powerband it had its advantages but sounded crap.
I doubt Ron, Ross, Sam (Michaels) and all the other team principles care that I didn't like the sound (no rise or fall in engine note, always a piercing 18K scream) but I imagine always being at full power must be a massive advantage.
As long the car handles better than my Mum's CVT Volvo did it sounds like a winner.

Could Mad Max have banned them?

Put simply, instead of the engine changing speed and the gearbox changing this to the output speed of the back wheels, with a CVT the engine always revs high in the rev range to give maximum power (18-19,000 RPM with V8 F1 engines) and the CVT constantly varies the output ratio to to supply power to the back wheels.
Sounds great on paper (engine always at max power, no jerks and balance changes with gear changes) but it sounds awful to the ear.
It was bad enough with the Volvo CVT reving at approx 5,000 ALL THE TIME but as someone said on another thread, imagine 20 F1 cars at 19,000. It would not be the same.

Just to point out that there are more types of CVTs that the planetary gear mentioned in the previous thread about this matter. There are electronic versions and hydraulic ones. The Prius has an electronic one, I think.

No because it was tested on private sessions and never used in real f1 event.

I thought that the Silverstone lap record owned by DC was made with a CVT installed.

According to this Discovery Channel F1 DVD thingy I've got, Williams were banned from using it not long after they first tested it.

I can see a huge dissadvantage to the system though.

The teams will now have to install speedos.
Nah just kidding.

The one problem is that drivers won't be able to get a good idea of the speed their going when cornering. The drivers rely partly on engine sound to know how fast their going. Also in wet conditions, i.e. Adelaide '94 (I think) when the drivers couldn't see the car in front for spray and the only way to tell when the other guy was braking was engine sound.

Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

CVT & Seamless shift are entirely different. CVT is exactly what it's name suggestd. A seamless shift has steps between the (finite number of) gear ratios, but there is no delay in drive in moving from one ratio to the next.
