Oracle Red Bull Racing dominated the 2023 Formula 1 season with Max Verstappen as world champion, Sergio “Checo” Perez
finishing in second, and the team landing another Constructors’ championship. So what’s behind all the success?
Race strategy. Hear from Oracle Red Bull Racing Head of Strategy, Will Courtenay, as he defines race strategy, what it entails
and its impact on Formula 1 outcomes.
Team Principal and CEO, Christian Horner, and Verstappen discuss the types of calls race strategists are making before and during
each race weekend, including some memorable examples from this season.
Finally, learn the role Oracle technology, specifically Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, plays in helping the team make those calls
—sometimes in just seconds—and how they’ll continue to build upon the partnership for another dominant season in 2024.

That certainly is an area where they excel at, just not making any stupid calls. They were also constantly opening the ball, going for the undercut. Trusting eachother.

The BEST strategy team on the grid, hands down. Very very rare they call it wrong.

Former Red Bull engineer warns for 2024: 'If they solve that, it will be terrifying'
by Mark Hanselman 09/12/2023

Blake Hinsey, former performance engineer of Max Verstappen, has looked back on a dominant season for Red Bull Racing and Verstappen. The Briton, who was a guest on an Autosport podcast, also sees few reasons to assume that Red Bull will be more vulnerable in 2024, partly because the RB19 still had some weaknesses that can now be eliminated.

Hinsey points out a number of factors that play against Red Bull. 'You have to deal with that scale of wind tunnel time: the higher you end up, the less wind tunnel time you get. In addition, you already have a level playing field because of the budget limit. The five top teams will at least reach that limit in terms of budget.'

Yet Hinsey thinks that a lot of improvement is still needed at Red Bull. "However, at Red Bull you have a team that has a big advantage and has been able to manage this since the start of the season." For example, Red Bull has been focusing entirely on the RB20 for months. 'If you make the right choices philosophically and have found development paths that allow you to achieve additional achievements, it is usually easier to improve further.'

Red Bull now needs to look at where they can improve, and one of those areas is at low speeds.
Max himself recently talked about this, and the data also makes it clear that Ferrari is better in slow corners.
If they solve that, it will be terrifying," Verstappen's former engineer concludes.

This is gonna be pure speculation, but I think solving that will be quite tricky for Red Bull, unless they have something completely new brewing for 2024. They've built a very efficient car, but it relies a lot on the suspension and floor to provide that downforce. Without a trick like the blown diffuser, i think it's gonna be very hard for them to find the downforce they need in low speed corners with the design philosophy they're currently employing. Ground effects do not work very well at low speeds.

Jake Dennis: "Can confirm the RB20 looks good on the simulator"

Image

Red Bull Racing simulator and development driver (since 2018) Jake Dennis has lifted the veil on Max Verstappen
and Sergio Pérez's car for 2024. Virtually, at least, the RB20 does what it's supposed to do.

RB20 looks good on the simulator

“It was great to drive 125 laps on Tuesday,” Dennis said during the FIA gala at the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi at the end of November, where he took his place behind the wheel of the RB19. "That was the best day of my career. All credits to these guys for building something so special. This car is amazing. Hopefully the RB20 does nice too. I can confirm it looks good on the simulator,
so we should should be good next year," he says with a wink.

Given the car RB have had over the last two seasons, you'd expect the next itteration would be good as well.

RB20 on simulator seem promising. likely a step up in terms of performance again

Considering the advantages they already have with rb19 I am just wondering if RBR may choose not to show their full potential for RB20 at the start of 2024 and bring in upgrades later in the season..

Well, of course it's expected to be a step up in performance - and i still expect them to win next Season unless one of the other teams comes out with a rocket ship.

I just don't think they'll easily solve their three main weaknesses (tire warmup in qualifying, slow speed corners and aerodynamic performance on bumpy tracks) 🙂
