Re: Mercedes SLS

Post

The one featured in your link panda looks alot nicer than the original and I echo the sentiments of others here about the back end, it just looks wrong after such an agressive front end. One gripe with that American version is those wheel arches what's with the pointless pieces attatched to the side?

Nicely done. Thanks for posting this. Of course I can't agree with the comparison of the LA Rendevous vs Nordschleife.

On the Nordschleife he would have kept that engine seldomly under 6000 revs.

I found the engine noise quite striking. It makes most modern muscle cars sound like... soft porn. Whenever he took his foot of the throttle it fired like it's a full-on racing V8 beast from the 70-s. On one hand I quite like it. On the other a gullwing muscle-car sounding GT with high tech double-clutch paddle shift operated gearbox, it's somehow wrong, don't you think?

just to remind everyone how the original straight-6 300SL sounds

Off-topic: It's nice to see Jay Leno in something which finds him both likable and compelling. Who knew he was capable?

Hearing the exhaust note of that car has done nothing to make me like this car any less. Mercedes seems to have just gotten it all right. For me, at least.

The father of a school friend of mine had a 300SL soft top, so no gull-wing doors. Some years after school he (my friend, not the father) took me for a short spin in it. Three things that I will never forget.
1. The whine from the differential; which was right close to your shoulder.
2. Richard changed into top gear when we were doing 160kph & the tires spun - road was wet.
3. The engine. With the huge cast aluminium air box and cast aluminium valve covers (engine canted over on its side?). It looked like an aircraft engine; unlike any other car engine I had seen. (One of Richard's sisters boyfriend had a Jaguar E-type so I had that to compare it to as an example.)
I have lost touch with Richard but I would expect he still has that car.

For me anyhow its a stunning looking automobil, perhaps the rear could have looked a little nicer, but stunning none the less. Its the type of car that you cant refur to as a 'she' because it looks so pleasingly vulgar and muscular. Somehow I feel it looks more like an american super-sports/muscle car than it does a benz. The sound of that V8 is really beautiful.

Fair enough that 'circuit' used for the fast and famous is not completley like the great Nordschleife, but its not completley unlike it either. Roads going through hills, surrounded by trees(at least in 1 section) plenty of dog-legs, kinks and sweeping turns, plenty of elevation changes and varying in gradient degrees. I'd say well done to the lads that put it all together.

It's not fair! SLS instead of Miura, firefighters instead of mobsters, and most of all - no bulldozer!

That's because the mobsters work for his last team...

Re: New Mercedes SLS 63 AMG Saftey Car For 2010

Post

This is me sitting in the SLS before its official debut in North America. I was invited by AMG to attend media day before the LA Auto Show last year.

Image

I hit my head on the door like everybody else. Good thing it's leather-padded. The best thing about the night was I was completely wasted (open bar!) and was allowed to sit in almost ANY car (including Astons, the Audi R8; high-end Mercedes; the Lotus Evora).
