They have gotten their explanation about intake pulse tuning slightly wrong. Here is a better description from Heywoods "Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals":

"As the piston moves downward during the intake stroke, a reduced pressure occurs at the inlet valve relative to the pressure at the open end of the inlet pipe. A rarefaction wave travels down the intake pipe to the open end and is reflected as a compression wave. A positive tuning effect occurs when the compression wave arrives at the inlet valve as the valve is closing."

This is basically the same, but opposite from what is happening during exhaust pulse tuning. When the exhaust valve is opening a compression wave is formed, which travels to the collector in the exhaust manifold and is reflected as a rarefaction wave and travels back the exhaust valve again, preferably arriving when the exhaust valve is about to close.

tuned lehgth inlet systems appeared on motorcycles decades before their 'invention' by Mercedes-Benz as attributed in the Autozine reference
in 1938 ? Norton race motorcycle was bought by the UK National Physical Laboratory to investigate 'free supercharging'

tuned length won everything in car WDC when that went to F2 rules in 1952 & 53 (Ascari in the Lampredi-designed 4 cyl Ferrari)

basically, tuned length in cars had been stifled by the dominance of supercharging from the early 20s to 1951
many N/A 1 inlet tract/cylinder engines eg fuel injected Offenhauser and 30s UK Freddie Dixon disciples seem short of the tuned length
the tuned length of course being all about enabling and using further extended valve timing

Mercedes-Benz did invent the continuously variable length system for the 1955 sportscar (WEC equivalent) - it was never raced ?

so Renault with nearly completely new PU in Canada?
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

So much slagging of these engines from the onset, not noisy enough, not enough cylinders, they're too restrictive... Today we saw these engines top the fastest ever lap around Albert Park with Lewis Hamilton's 50th pole.

Schumacher's 2004 lap of 1:24.125 was toppled by Hamilton with a 1:23.837 not bad when you consider they're doing it with 50% less fuel.

Missed that, I stand corrected. Give it another year. :wink: Don't miss the less fuel part... damn new qualifying format.

Qualifying was slower than 1.24.1. It was a race lap with very little fuel (but somewhat used tires).
