Seize the slightest opportunity - Kovalainen

The Finnish ING Renault F1 Team driver, Heikki Kovalainen, will start tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix from 7th place. Team mate Giancarlo Fisichella will start his home race from 15th place. Kovalainen talks about his day:

Heikki, how did today go?

"A lot better. I found the same sensations as I had in testing last week. This being said, I flat-spotted one of my tyres yesterday and that upset the car’s handling. It also interfered with our programme. Today, everything was back on course and the team did a great job. That probably explains the few tenths that got me into P3."

Was seventh the best possible result today?

"I think so. There was a moment when I tried to catch Kubica; I pushed very hard but it wasn’t enough. Finally, this result complies with our simulations."

The cars in front of you seem a lot quicker and those behind slower; so are you going to have a quiet drive into seventh place?

"Difficult to say. It’s true that if nothing untoward happens in front of me then seventh is the best I can hope for. But I really want to do better than that; I don’t yet know how to go about it. I’ll try and get the very maximum of what I’ve got at my disposal, and seize the slightest opportunity. What’s sure is that the Istanbul race showed that we’re capable of taking places off BMW."

Will the first corner be the key to your race?

"It’s true that at Monza the first corner is a trap. You have to really heat up the tyres and brakes during the formation lap, and then hope that nobody runs into you!"
