Our racing speed was better than McLaren's - Kubica

The heat was most definitely on at the Grands Prix in Australia and Malaysia. Thankfully the excellent fitness levels of the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers meant they were relatively unaffected by the heat. However, Robert Kubica can imagine using his drink bottle for a second function in the future...

The high temperatures in the 2008 Formula One season so far have suited the BMW Sauber F1 Team. In the two races in Melbourne and Sepang, man and machine defied the heat - the squad from Munich and Hinwil was able to celebrate second place at both Grands Prix. The physical fitness of the drivers, the reliability of the BMW Sauber F1.08 and the impressive speed of the car proved to be a recipe for success.

In Malaysia, the BMW Sauber F1 Team was even able to mix it with McLaren - a team that still had a significant advantage in 2007. "I think our racing speed was better than McLaren's," Kubica confirms. "However, that was only the second race. In the first race we were slower, and here we were a bit faster. We must wait a bit longer to see exactly where we stand."

It was anything but a walk in the park for Robert, who managed to stave off the opposition to take second place at the "Sepang International Circuit". "My drink bottle was already hot at the beginning of the race, as it was extremely hot in the cockpit," says the Pole. "I didn't drink very much, because it was simply too hot. Next time I will take some teabags into the cockpit with me." The desert race in Bahrain on 6th April will once again put the drivers' condition to the test.
