This pic from the official F1 site shows the RB with scoops to supply the DD, whereas McLaren have openings in the side wall. The RB scoops reach further forward too

what would be the purpose of those 'serifs' on the diffuser?

It is fluorescent paint , used to make visual the airflow and how certain parts of the diffuser are working . It was also used during winter testing .
Mc Laren brought a new diffuser which was tested but not finally chosen to be raced . It seems that many teams bring new parts a race earlier to apply and test them during free Friday testing because of the test ban rule .

I meant the pointy bits at the top corners of the diffuser. Are they vortex generators? and how do they help the flow there?

Im really enjoying this forum and threads like this, i have been reading it for ages but now ive decided to join in.. on topic i notice hamiltons car is using a new rear diffuser with a much wider cut out for the top plane, in addition to a revised front wing at the nurburgring this weekend whilst kovalainen makes do with the current parts as a comparison.

Lots of changes to Hamilton's car .. according to the pics I've seen ..
massively revised rear diffuser
engine cover (without those bulges now!)
floor (now more like RB with flip ups at sides)
nose looks different .. maybe wider not sure though
new front wing
revised sidepods, turning vanes, and barge boards at splitter areas
In short it looks like they've done a lot of repackaging on the mechanicals to conform with other successful designs as much as possible. Looks like it's working for them .. or at least for Hamilton. Hieki will just have to wait.
