Thank you.

Other than scaling the points by 2.5, the main difference is a point or two less for coming second, and also extending the points to P9 & P10 finishers. So those who win, or limp home are better under the new system, while places 3 to 8 are pretty much unchanged. Those extra few points could make a difference this season, just compare Alonso & Hamilton with the true standings.

Re: 2012 British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit

Post

P.S: This is a bit off topic. I did try to look around for older threads but couldn't get one that discussed the new points system specifically. Moderators, please do move this to the appropriate thread, if it doesn't belong here.

I was trying to see if Ferrari and Redbull happen to pull away from the field, what are the worst and best scenarios for Ferrari to catch Redbull up in the WCC. And one thing I observed then in the points system...

Silverstone 2012 - RBR 1-3; Ferrari 2-4. Position-wise it sounds kinda symmetric but RBR takes 40 vs Ferrari 30, which is obvious and logical given that 1-3 is better than 2-4, when considered as "a team" - for WCC.

But if it was RBR 1-4 and Ferrari 2-3, then it would be RBR 37 vs Ferrari 33. Does that mean "as a team", are we saying 1-4 finish is better than 2-3 ? Getting a win is better than putting both drivers on the podium?

Some light here please?

I would say that the 1-4 is the better deal because it gives you the obvious win (25!), and in this case it was for Webber who is second in the DC. But on top of that, it gives you more points for the CC, so yes, win-win.

Maximum point scoring is the main goal, not just a podiums. You're missing out on that by getting the 2-3.

And no one remembers that double non-victory podium. :)

Well, probably a 1-4 vs 2-3 might sound close. How about 1-5 vs 2-3 (Gives you 35 vs 33)... Or even 1-6 vs 2-3 (Makes even at 33 !! ).... Does that make a team where one driver finishes 5th or 6th better than other team where they made 2-3 ? Just because one driver wins means the team is better?

I understand that at the end of the day, a win sounds cool and better but when speaking of CC, as a team, should not a 2-3 be a better performance...? Its like saying one of my drivers might be significantly less competitive and I can still expect a CC just with performances from my other best driver?

I'm trying to understand here...

Edit: The 2010 system of 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 sounds to make justice to "team effort" a bit better than current system. JMHO. Or if we're trying to value a win more, something like 25-20-17-14-11-9-7-4-2-1 system could do.... Any comments?

After Germany, penalty included, with pre- 1991 point system and between brakets the score according to the 1991-2002 point system

point system from 1961 to 1990 included, (1991-2002 included):
1st = 9 points (1st = 10 points)
2nd = 6 points
3rd = 4 points
4th = 3 points
5th = 2 points
6th = 1 point

would see:

Alonso - 47 (50)
Webber - 33 (35)
Vettel - 30 (31)
Raikkonen - 24
Hamilton - 23 (24)
Button - 21 (22)
Rosberg -18 (19)
Grosjean - 16
Perez - 11
Maldonado - 9 (10)
Kobayashi - 6
Schumacher - 4
Massa - 4
Hulkenberg - 2
Di Resta - 1
Senna - 1

A suggestion, Ray - if you could add this info too.

A mention of the position in brackets would help to see how much of difference, if at all, the new system is making in determining the positions. Just to know.

Example:

Alonso – 66
.....
Grosjean – 31(+1) -- Meaning the old system puts him ahead
Rosberg – 30(-1) -- Meaning the old system puts him below
.....
Kobayashi – 12(+1)
Maldonado – 11(-1)
.....
Finishing second is being the first one of losers....

When the race ended, there were quite a few incidents under investigation. This tabulation takes the PROVISIONAL result right at the race end.

Alonso – 66
Vettel – 58
Raikkonen – 53
Webber – 52
Hamilton – 45
Button – 40
Grosjean – 31
Rosberg – 30
Perez – 18
Kobayashi – 12
Schumacher – 12
Massa – 12
Maldonado – 11
Hulkenberg – 10
di Resta – 9
Senna – 7
Vergne – 2

Most interesting is that Webber (who is in actual points 132, vs Raikkonen's 131) has switched places with Raikkonen.
