McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Against the backdrop of all this, a single-element beam wing looks interesting. Here we can really say that it is unloaded and designed to reduce drag.
The tip possibly is a vortex generator as well. Maybe an extra measure to keep the front wake away from the sidepods?
Definitely not a strong one, but little things matter when you add them up.

I'm not convinced the watersides have changed I think it's just the shadows are hidden and it looks smooth.

Need some pics from practise.
Nope, waterslides are definitely changed.

Before -> https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GLb3DH3XsAA ... name=large
After -> https://i.ibb.co/Z6qwPDS/15-F08757-D376 ... C3-BC6.jpg

Just follow the crease towards the engine cover and see how much steeper it is in the older spec almost immediately after the inlet. That's not the case anymore, the "fall down" only happens at the rear-end.
Yeah its definately different! But not flat though I don't think. Definately getting more airflow in that area. More if a spoon shape than a shoulder.

Here you can clearly see how differently they arranged the trimming under the sidepods. And they pulled it all back. Also, water slides begin much later and go steeply down into the diffuser area.

Everything matters here. Every detail. We cannot consider only one local area, since the air flows around the entire chassis, and not locally individually.

I haven’t read a book on aerodynamics for 10 years, so someone will answer your question more accurately.

Yes it is definately tighter all round, increasing the airflow to the wing and diffuser, on top and underneath the sidepod.

Is it wider by a little?

upper lip moved far forward, almost where halo starts/ is attached. Level with where senna starts, before, it was way after the senna logo

Lots of small details, looks to me like all of them are aimed at bodywork drag reduction. Deeper and steeper slides and slight changes to inlet definitely aimed at lowering drag. Bigger mid wing definitely there to increase the local vorticity, potentially aiming at rear tyre and affecting front tyre wake outwash

Nice job, no huge step anywhere, but loads of small steps everywhere
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Has anyone seen a good side by side of the FW ?
It's very hard make out the changes from the pics I've seen so far

This is the pic that tells me that the waterslides aren't gone near the driver, there's clearly an upper edge, it's just more like a spoon than a canal at the top of the sidepods now. Definately not flat.
