A black and red/orange McLaren would be awful. I hope they keep the chrome! That was a real colour innovation and is still awesome. Maybe Mercedes claimed the chrome colour from McLaren (or they made a deal: "you give me chrome colour and we give rebate on engine and KERS") to paint their new "silver-arrows". What a shame.
As far as I know orange is the traditional McLaren colour. But who wants to see a McLaren that looks like a Virgin...

If you were to look again at the Virgins, I think you will find that they are not actually orange, but a bright red like the red winning shirts that Mclaren wear when they win a race.

The Mclaren orange is actually a school bus yellow, and looks like this:

whereas the Virgin "orange" is actually not much of an orange but this color:

which to me seems more red than anything.

I think that the current mclaren colours are more iconic than any mclaren colours of years gone by, I think it looks nicer with chrome, the orange is a mclaren colour however that hasn't appeared in f1 for many years, apart from testing cars of course I think they will stick with the chrome, as if you look at the mclarens over the years they have had a transition from the mercedes grey to the chrome they have now, I think they will stick with chrome.

That's a MP4-20 Giblet, isn't it?

It's not the 19 (not the same sidepods at all and the 19 has no 'horns') and it's not the 20 (this air box intake is more triangular and smaller). So this must be the Mp4 21... the mirrors shape prove it anyway.

The chrome, or silver, IIRC, first showed up with the West sponsorship of Mclaren, and was kept after they followed the tobacco ban (unlike some other teams like Renault and Ferrari). The fact that Mercedes was becoming a bigger part year on year brought on the full silver look.

I think they would be best served to find a new scheme that either plays on their heritage or goes in a new direction as they have done before.

No matter what, Vodafone colors are going to be involved.

Not to be argumentative, but IF McL cares about being "iconic," they simply need to pick a color scheme and stick with it (and win). Success + repetition = "iconic."

Maybe a McLaren in Black and orange/red would look fantastic. But Chrome...and red is just their colour! And of course orange is different to the Virgin red , but on the TV-Screen you can't discriminate colours as good as in reality or on photos.
In any case, the new McLaren will have a better colour scheme than the 2007 Honda.

if the colour scheme needs to be that iconic then i do not even understand why you guys pick the chrome/red which is only in use since 2007 and the silver merc colous only since 1997, they ran way longer with the Marlboro paintjob...

Hasn't the chrome/red paint job been in use since 2006?

2006 was johnny walker with the black, though it was quite an 'interim' livery as there wasnt much different on the 2007 car

I'd like to see them going back to the historic orange (Giblet, that's not 'school bus yellow', that is how actual oranges look).

ImageUnfortunately because of Vodafone they have to stick to the 90-s pop style fluorescent orange/red, let's call it 'acid grapefruit' :) . With added black that will look like VR. So they'll probably use a lot of black with a bit of chrome and that acid grapefruit.
