From the Malaysia thread:

Diesel wrote:Lap 28 - Schumacher Vs. Kobayashi - Schumacher made 2 moves on the pit straight, penalty please.

Lap 44 - Petrov Vs. Massa - Petrov also does a similar thing, penalty please.

I don't have access to the recorded feed where I'm at now. If anyone doesn't mind spending the time to post these examples, I'd appreciate it.

And, I left out the Lap 1 - Vettel Vs. Hamilton since that's been discussed already, and Vettel fans will defend his race-start weaving until they run out of breath...

If they were to penalise Vettel for turn 1, they would have to do the entire field, except whoever is right at the back. They were all weaving on the run to the first corner on lap 1!!! Besides, have you seen Hamilton on the run to the first corner? Surely he impedes anyone behind him as his darting from left to right was pretty wild.

Lucky, I have not yet recorded over the Malaysian GP so I can review both of the incidents which you reference.

Schumacher v Kobayashi - no weaving. Schumacher holds the centre of the track and makes Kobayashi take the long way round. Schumacher did not make 2 moves, it may have been Kobayashi you saw dipping in and out behind Schumacher. From a distance both cars look the same but if you watch them both very closely a couple of times run down the straight it is clear that there was no weaving.

Petrov v Massa - slightly debatable however a penalty would be useless seeing as Petrov didn't finish. What would be the use of a 20 second penalty for Petrov? I think trashing the car supersedes any penalty that Charlie Whiting could dish out.

Have you run out of breath yet? ;)

Since I don't have access to the video, I'll trust your analysis and stand corrected!

My one last "complaint" about the situation, though...why not give the penalty during the race?

No idea. My only guess is that a drive through might be less of a penalty.

Watching highlights of the China start, could someone tell me why Vettel wasn't penalised for weaving in the same way Hamilton was in Malasia? It seemed far greater and was actually quite similar to Schumacher's pinch on Barrichello last year.

It seems FIA has decided to ignore the rule on the starts for the last two races. If you read back through this thread and the Malaysia race thread, you'll see lots of argument for why they should/shouldn't enforce the weaving rule for the race start. Then you can decide which camp you'd like to agree with, but either way FIA seems to have made up their mind about eratic driving from pole. We'll see how they enforce the rule if someone else ever manages to take pole and then drive like a drunk at the start.

It's not something that's just started happening though - it's happened in F1 for as long as I can remember. It's one of those things whereby it's accepted policy because it always been there.

Also, Martin Brundle mentioned at the weekend just gone, that the rule isn't enforced at the start of the race, because it's "just not practical to do so".

I'm not saying that I agree with it as such, but that's the explanation for it.

Agreed, it's the F1 convention.

It would be impossible to apply at the start of a race, it would lead to pile ups. A driver facing a crowded grid with some slower cars in front must be allowed to weave through the gaps. Otherwise we'd have the following scenario:

Mr Hamilton - "Mr Vettel, I do believe you qualified on pole position, would you kindly lead us through the first corner please."

Mr Vettel - "Mr Hamilton, you are too kind. I shall ask my colleague Mr Webber to fall in line behind you."

We weren't complaining about weaving to get around someone else. We're specifically talking about weaving for the sake of blocking. There is NO OTHER reason for the pole driver to weave.

Well, there are reasons and reasons, as Richard points out.

What if you watch a girl with a nipple in the armpit? Or if some babe takes out her brassiere to protect herself from the fumes? I would weave. I would weave like crazy.

Body Perks Brand Nipple Enhancers. $19.95 plus shipping and handling from Bodyperks Inc., P.O. Box 652, Wayzata, Minn. 55391; http://www.bodyperks.com Have some babes using them along the main straight and your opponent will win a penalty. Or not.

Emergency Brassiere Face Mask. $29.99 plus shipping and handling from http://www.ebbra.com. It includes a hazardous gas filter in the lining. Very handy! You can yell "It is an emergency! Lend me your left tit bra!" and watch your opponents wave like... well, like Alonso and Hamilton.

Don't be naive, people. A diffuser is not the only gadget used in F1. Sometimes, to win you need to walk that extra mile... or the extra nipple. (Nipple, nipple, nipple, I love to write that word).

Ciro makes more sense in his left of left-field posts, than the same dribble that gets recycled on F1T after every race.

At the level of angst that some have here, regarding F1 starts, it's a wonder there hasn't been a cry for rolling starts behind a safety car.

I mean...I get his point, perhaps my use of the caps "no other" was a bit too strong. Extra nipples, or bra's over the face could cause a person to weave. But that wouldn't excuse the fact that they're breaking a rule. ;)
