Changing tyres under a red flag

Hi guys

Anyone knows how is the red flag procedure? In my mind cars couldnt be serviced like they where after the red flag (changing tires for the first three, changing wings for Hamilton), since a red flag stop the "time", not the race, cars are still in race, thats why they stay in track and dont go to pits.

Rules to the side, it was a shame, that last laps would be amazing with the first tree on bad tires.

100% agree. Thse last laps were a waste of time - should have been raced on the tyres they were on at the red flag.

Only exception would be in case of sudden heavy rain for example.

Here you go: 2011 Sporting Regulations.PDF (Skip to pg.27, Article 41)

41.4 Whilst the race is suspended:
- neither the race nor the timekeeping system will stop, however, in accordance with Article 5.3 the length of the race suspension will be added to the maximum two hour period;
- cars may be worked on once they have stopped on the grid or entered the pits but any such work must not impede the resumption of the race;
- only team members and officials will be permitted on the grid.
41.5 Cars may not enter the pit lane when the race is suspended.

With the pitlane shut, you can only work on the cars on the grid, as they are being readied for the restart. Remember, Parc Ferme regulations end as soon as the race begins, so you can do whatever you like to the cars (including, unfortunately, tyres).


And yeah, these rules unfortunately impinged on what could have been a classic finish to the Monaco GP.

I should think the basic red flag rule was written years ago when the cars were less reliable than today. It's one of the rules that, thankfully, doesn't get used very often so there's little reason to update it over time.

As it's unlikely to happen again I'd say just leave the rule as is and move on. Changing it won't change the result of this race and might make a future race more dangerous. The Law of Unintended Consequences has a habit of applying itself in these situations...

I certainly didn't enjoy being robbed of the end of the Monaco GP, and it appears that neither did Pirelli – they're calling for the rule to be changed.

That stupid rule ruined the end of the race.

Yep, totally agree, the cars should have been left alone, any changes should require a pitstop to fix, replace or repair anything on the car !!

If one driver can repair crash damage to return thier car to race condition then how can you not agree with others getting new tyres?

The cars should have been in parc ferme conditions. No tyre changes or repairs to anyone at all.

Im with yourself, im against them changing the tyres, this firs and formost shouldnt be allowed.

However, as for Hamilton and his damage, this should be allowed as long as its only a front wing.

I do see how that is a contradiction of terms, but id rather have more cars finish the race with this points system than with the old system. Remember, the year Panis won Monaco there were only 3 people that crossed the line, P4 to P6 were all out the race and classified by finishing within 10% of the total race distance if i remember correctly.
