F1 engine sound problem

Hi guys
We all know the big disscusion about engine sound for 2013.
The comeback of Turbos is quite exciting,but the victim will be the sound.F1 sound is the trademark of this sport.So why doesn't anyone make a sugestion for high reving inline 5 turbo engines?Inline 5s sound much more similar to V10,then inline 4s to V8.
I'm convinced that a inline 5 turbo at 19000 rpm would make you drool. :lol:
Compare the sounds of BMW V10 and Audi TT RS(inline 5).Imagine them at higher rpm.
If you find this idea good,please help bringing it further.

What trademark and from what generation of engine? We have 4 cylinders and 4x4 cylinders in an H config. We've had 1.5 litre v6 turbo, 3.5 litre v12 v8 and v10. 3 litre v10. We've had boxer motors, production motors, turbo and NA.

Each generation had a sound, and they were all epic in their own way. Now we are going to get blow off sounds, huge pressures in the engines and flames licking out the exhaust on down shifts.

The V8's have never sounded as good as the V10's and the never sounded as good as the V12's. Honestly, so long as the sound is 'chaotic' and exciting, which it should be, it will have appeal.

I've never heard a bad sounding F1 motor.

Go back to the 80s and 90s and you'll find that engines had a much more bassy sound back then. The high pitched scream of modern engines is something entirely transient. It's going in 2013, deal with it.

I´m excited, todays V8´s barely sound good imo. Especially with the overrun system they use now.

V16
V12
V10

Golden years of F1.

V8

so-so.

There are several technical reasons why this would make no sense.
  • a turbo engine typically creates power much more from torque than naturally aspired engines do. This negates the need to design for high revs.
  • the new engines will be direct injected with spray based combustion. That doesn't work very well with high revs. You need very high injection pressure which isn't a simple thing to do in a petrol fuel pump.
  • high revving engines are not as efficient as engines with higher torque characteristic

I think the high revving isn't the only thing that makes an engine sound great, most V8's have a low rev range and sound gorgeous, although gorgeous is completely different to ear-bleeding, blood-curdling screams of the old V10's.

Has anyone heard an Inline 4 racing engine before? What do they sound like?

The closest thing to a racing car I can think of with an inline 4 is an ariel atom... They sound pretty weak, but then they get no where near 12k rpm, don't have twin turbos, and generate half the horse power.

What about standard cars?? Many standard car series run inline 4's. But they have been 2.0 N/A for a long time and are now switching to the new 1.6 turbo. And the new 1.6 sound dull as hell.

Last year at Le Mans there was also a LMP2 car i believe with a inline 4 mazda turbo engine.

So there is plenty inline 4 racing engines.
And what about rallycars?? S2000 runs 2.0 N/A and they make around 300hp and they sound awsome. But i also think they are switching to the 1.6 turbo?

The WRC rallycars run 2.0 turbos and they also sounds very good. Just not fitting sound for a F1 engine. Sounds more lige a modified street car.

Actually the current flatplane V8s sound very much like 2 I4s joined together, so IF you had a full field of HIGH revving inline 4s you would more or less get the same noise. When people think V8s they usually think the road going crossplane variety, with the burbly low range noise due to the odd firing order

Ever listened to motorcycles?

Many (not all) are straight 4's, revving to 13,000~14,000-ish, often more.

I used to vist the Isle of man throughout the 80's and 90's, nothing so beautiful as hearing a racer on full song down Creg Ny Baa.

Ok, here's one of the better examples:

This is a 2.0l i4 by AER

It's not terrible, but quite monotonous. It's noise, not music.
I wish they went for a 1.8l V6 though. If you add just 2 cylinders, magic happens!
