? Not bad for a wet setup to be the fastest on the straights with 312km/h...

How did you figure it out :D?

An announcer on Speed speculated that Mercedes had a "wet setup" in because of "visible body roll" or something to that effect.

Whether or not the car looked mechanically soft is debatable or up to a certain amount of interpretation. I didn't pay that much attention in the broadcast. But even presuming that is true and the car is indeed mechanically soft, who is to say that isn't their dry package and that they felt it was the best compromise? In any event it clearly worked pretty well relative to the field.

What would be telling is if there were an appreciable change in attitude control in the Merc cars from how they unloaded and ran in FP1, to their qualifying / race trim.

Yeah i agree, they are definatly going for the best compromise. That F-duct really gave them an advantage in a postion like this. Although i didn't see anything noticable setup differences from the other cars. Although, i'm kind of concerned about Hamilton's setup if the rain falls because he's been off track and had lockups almost all weekend long but there is no doubt he's a great wet weather driver.

Should bear in mind that from what I've seen anyway, Hamilton has historically been one to push his trail braking quite deep. In years previous I recall him locking inside fronts under the brakes with some regularity - but it works for him.

It should be noted here that the W03 has a very soft set up.

Its a continuation of the philosophy behind the W02 with plenty of roll through corners, even in dry races.

Agree with JET, the Merc is noticeably softer than either the Red Bull or the McLaren and has been since launch.

There are some good examples if you lookup some onboards from Australia, you can see even down the straights there is noticeably more travel in the suspension over imperfections. This also causes the front wing to frequently graze the ground as noticed and wrongly referred to by numerous pundits as evidence of a 'flexi' wing.

Why exactly, is a subject for speculation, perhaps simply a setup choice, what the car responds best to, or maybe a byproduct of their rumoured interlinked suspension?

Could be as simple as they believe the Pirelli tires are very sensitive to ride inputs, and have chosen to generally lean more on mechanical than aero grip as a setup philosophy... or in other words that the gain in mechanical offsets the loss of aero.

Need CFD or Newey at hand to discern that.

Doesn't seem to be a great wet weather set-up if they were running one.
