Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Anything related to a specific race should go in the appropriate race thread.

4 tenths from a carbon casing on the gearbox just from allowing easier setup/more ballast? Hmmm. A tenth or two maybe at best - easier in the long run on tyres probably more likely than any outright pace increase.

What 'newly augmented ability to maintain ride height'?

Such a system would surely be illegal?

Their 'mercury' heavy gravity interconnected passive suspension system was discussed quite a bit pre-season and there is some conjecture regarding how it works, but what I mean is Brawn recently stated something about something changing internally with their suspension system and then he mentioned how the system can basically 'think' as if it were alive or some nonsense. But when I see them playing with tea tray settings, I think ride height, and when I think ride height I can't help but think of that clever suspension system there was so much talk of.

And I can't really see any difference, must all be internal.

Oh no! NOt the 'Mercury' suspension again. That does not exist, full stop!

that´s the barnard -coughlan-savage line not Brawn I´d say.BAR´s rise into the winners circle was only after they introduced their carbonfibre gearbox casing and they dropped the idea only last year for whaterver reason to reintroduce it this year.

Fear not, we already have a separate thread for the "Possible Mercedes WO3 suspension concepts".

Its 4 tenths in oughright pace from weight saving. However there will be more unlocked from mechanichal setup than anything else, but that will be developed more over the next 2 or 3 GP. And yes, it saves the tyres on long runs, whitch will generally see the car maybes to go an extra 2 laps to the previous gearbox.

The Cast/Carbon box came back with the MGP W01 on cost grounds as it was saving a arround 25% on costs to a carbon case, the last cases on the BGP001 were cast/carbon ones seemingly. However that was on the Bridgestones and the extra weight over the rear gave that car better traction seemingly. However they are back to carbon to save the tyres and also have a gearbox that is a little thinner and is shaped better to allow better aero. Ultimatly it gives them more downforce from the beam wing and the diffuser.

ESP ,I´m pretty sure none of the Mercedes formula 1 cars of recent time was running overweight .So saving weight is ONLY helful to lower Cof G height at best as the tungsten is placed very low in the car.
In recent years there was no point in saving gearboy weight due to the mandatory weight distribution .
It seems Mercedes now has found a reason to rearrange components but is the weight distribution not fixed still?

Marcush discussed the fixed weight distribution, so that benefit is void.

Please provide some detail about how the carbon allows you to 'unlock the mechanichal setup' benefits? I see absolutely on reason for this expectation.

They have to abort the Dud Exhaust & go for a Mclaren style one. I feel they can find a Solid 3-4 tenths in there if they can work the exhaust properly.

Most teams are working with their version of the DDRS. None of them might work as well as Mercedes but it would still give them a few valuable tenths allowing them to close down furthur. As you know given how competitive F1 is now a couple of tenths might mean no Q3.

Mercedes are fading away in terms of pace or others are catching up. Last year they had minimal in-season development. This year that is the case too. Sauber debuted the new exhaust after their Barca Last day testing one. That is phenomenal given their resources.

Mercedes have to find time. They are sacrificing huge straight line speed every race just to have a bit of downforce. They must find this downforce & this can come through a new exhaust. Or else it will end like last year. In the limbo. 3rd Place is probably out of the question. I think Mclaren are probably out of hand. Lotus look strong and Red Bull and Ferrari are making big strides in every race.

A 5th place would be a disaster.

the carbon gearbox is running cooler ,at least that was the claim when it was introduced at arrows and BAR .
And it is the nature of carbon to conduct heat very differently to aluminium (very bad across the fibres but just as good as AL along the fibre
It should offer at least a slight aero advantage -as you need less cooling surface for the transmission and need a bit less air through the car...Not much biut still a small advantage.
I think they only had the opportunity to go back to CF box when raising their headcount ? The BAR/Honda box looked elaborate enough to keep a lot of competent cf guys occupied for long periods of time.
