Well, I'm 25 and finally decided to get a driving licence as my insurance prices have started to become... reasonable... Like most people I am eagerly looking for something I dream to buy when I actually get my licence, something to add motivation and work towards.

But I was wondering if people might be able to recommend some cars as currently I'm coming up a bit short for those hidden gems. I'm looking for something along the lines of...

- Not to much to handle for a new driver (I don't want to kill myself)
- Rear wheel drive (If possible)
- £2000-5000
- 25-40MPG
- The older the better, I hate new cars.
- Basic in functionality and can be easily upgraded with a lot of options and second hand parts available.
- Something that doesn't stand out to much on insurance and theft radar i.e. (Skyline etc...)

I'm a big motorsport fan (BTCC, F1, V8) and although I know the car I get won't be pushing any boundaries it would be nice to take it to a track day and work towards improving it slowly but surely.

NOTE: I don't pretend I can drive well or know anything about cars, but its something I want to work towards.

Cars that come to mind would be something like a Silvia S15, it wouldn't be my first choice but its a car that fits within that nice middle area that I'm looking for.

Anyway, thanks for your time and listing to me ramble.

Hahaha, yeah sorry. I'm living in the UK, I have being doing some digging myself and high on my list at the moment is a Lexus IS200 Sport. They are super cheap for the amount of car your getting, won't break any sound barriers on power but its a nice complete package with some options to increase performance if you want to down the line.

You are going to have to go for an 1990's Japanese import. They're the top of many recommendation lists, so I assume you have already considered and passed on them. But they are very affordable, bullet proof and offer very good performance. A Skyline would probably be a great first car.

^Only the GTR was AWD. All trims below it weren't. So an R33 or R34 might not be too bad in RWD form.

I had a stock R32 Skyline GT-R before, and a stock R34 GT-R Skyline. Both were AWD

That is what I'm saying! Sheesh, must you always be right?

Only the GTR was AWD. Hence me suggesting a lower 'trim' (no GTR).

BMW E30 318is

4-cylinder, better weight distribution then the 6-cylinder, is sort of the poor mans M3.

50/50 weight distribution, low seating position, RWD, a joy to drive.
Cheap as hell.

The GTS-T also falls into this category.

The E36 318i Compact has more power, and the same rear suspension as the E30, so can be a even better 'toy' than the stock E30

The better question to the OP is 'What do you want to do with it?'

Track days? Driving to work? Motorways? 'evo triangle'? Carrying family?

It wasn't RWD, but my first car was a tornado red 1992 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8L. That thing was so much fun to drive!.. I miss it so bad...
