Dear,

I have an argument with a friend on the DRS rules. And now a large bet is at stake. At first I LOL'ed when he claimed that DRS can be used by the leader when leader is behind the lapped car.

The regulation on DRS say that "gap to following car" has to be <1 sec. Does that relates to any car to on the track?

Is DRS activated when the leading car in beghind is a lapped car?
Can you point me to any source document to resolve that?

As long as your are within one second of ANY car on the track after passing the DRS detection line, you may use DRS in the next DRS zone.

CBA to find a source though

Hahaha, I can confirm that you have lost that bet.

it's a 1second gap ON TRACK. If the guy in P1 is 1 second behind a lapped runner on track, then yes, DRS is activateable. Conversely, if a guy is lapped, but is within DRS range of the car ahead, which is 1 lap + 1s ahead of him, then he can also use DRS, such as Barrichello DRSing past race leader hamilton in Abu Dhabi 2011.

Moral of the story - in factual gambling don't bet based on what you think - bet based on what you know.

Even if the car before one is going to the pits after detection you can use DRS.
