But, of course, this is also listed in the event calendar, and visible on this site's homepage

what benefit does a team have in launching early?

I can't believe how fast this year is rolling in, it will be barely two months since the end of F1 and testing will begin on Feb 5th.

what they are most afraid of is not being able get the car ready on time for testing. Mclaren was late a few years back and spend the first week of testing using the old car.

btw, did RBR cut short their test program on the new Pirelli tyres at Brazil last year?

McLaren were using the old car because the new car didn't work!
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Of course, at that point they were insisting that they were gathering data on the new Pirellis, in order to get a good model in their simulators and simulations, to allow them a faster pace of in-season development.

The situation will probably be the same this year, with the new Pirelli tyres being largely different from those of 2012. Red Bull may be somewhat worried about that now, but as far as I know it has not been confirmed what they are going to do at the Jerez test, if the RB9 will not be ready (and it certainly looks like that).

Re: Launch date schedule

It's interesting really. Newey has often liked to sacrifice the first test for an additional week of design time. The RB7 is, to memory, the only recent RB to attend the first test. The RB8 did, but in something that was far off the actual race spec. But you have to remember that reliability-wise, it's risky. And it could mean some stuff doesn't work as expected. See, for example, their B-spec sidepods at Barcelona last year. Or the 2011 McLaren "fantail" exhaust system.

I think one of the reasons for early launches is publicity, first to unveil their car (or, rather, livery) is bound to get more attention from the press.

Ferrari will launch its F2013 before the first test, date is yet to be confirmed. Williams FW35 and STR8 will be launched at Jerez on the 5th of Feb.

The launch does not have to be the car that drives around during the testing days. The chassis will very likely be finished, crashtested and approved by the time of the launch (and that is something that must all be done by that time if you want the new car at the very first testing day), but all the rest could very well still be in development. They are basicilly only showing a model roughly how the car looks like, something that was penned down already months ago.

I reckon launching early will be good for sponsors too as they dont need to compete for media exposures with other cars.

Last year, Caterham was the first to do so and I think they got front page coverage on F1 racing.

I hope the new cars will look pretty though
